一、课程性质、地位和任务
英语阅读是我国英语课程设置的主要培养目标，是我国高等院校英语专业的必修课程。而该课程的三级水平主要是针对英语专业大二学生第一学期而言。这个层次的教学任务是在原有基础上继续指导学生阅读难度更大的不同题材、体裁、风格的程度相当的英语读物简写本，并尝试阅读相对简单的英文原著，深化所学的语言知识，继续增强语感，扩大词汇量，提高阅读的兴趣。同时让学生继续通过阅读加深对英语国家的了解，扩大知识面，丰富学生的社会文化知识，继续培养学生对文化差异的敏感性，更高程度上提高学生的理解、分析、推理、判断能力。
二、课程主要内容概述及教学基本要求
该课程主要内容还是根据教学需要，选编不同时代、不同题材和体裁的文章，力求体现科学性、知识性、趣味性、循序渐进的提高理解能力和阅读速度，并同时配备较多数量的理论及习题来继续加深上学期所介绍的或增添新如何提高阅读能力和阅读技巧。
教学要求：
1、继续指导学生继续阅读更多数量且难度更大的不同读物，题材力求广泛，包括文学、艺术、政史、科技、经济等方面的文章。难度及词汇量要高于上学期的读物．（参考书目见下）
2、继续循序渐进的对学生进行阅读速度训练，以培养学生快速阅读能力，要求做到阅读难度低于精读课本的读物，第三阶段从每分钟的120个词起，最后达到170个词。
3、继续培养学生的理解能力，练习并强调如何抓主要词语，阅读意群，抓主要句子的本领，从而在更快时间里更为准确的掌握一篇读物的中心思想。
4、继续指导学生根据上下文选择或猜测词义，避免使用字典。（如：定义线索、同义词或复述线索、例释线索、比较/对照线索、经验线索或情景线索等）
5、继续引导学生在阅读过程中注意常用词及词组的延用。
6、继续练习寻找文章结构，找出或归纳每段及文章的中心句或主题句。（句首、句中、句尾、句首句尾都有、或从文中不能直接找到，需要自己概括的段落。）
7、继续练习快速浏览skimming和快速扫描scanning的能力。
8、介绍并有计划地做公共英语等级考试四级的阅读模拟题和真题。通过做题讲解、强调细节题、推理题、语义题、主旨题、态度题等阅读解题的测试重点。
9、继续引导学生进一步了解英语民族的社会文化、政治、经济、历史、地理、风俗、习惯等各种背景知识。
10、阅读Twenty-First Century及China Daily上的新闻报道。
三、课程内容
Unit 1 基本要求：正确理解text ，掌握Newspaper and Headlines 的阅读技巧；有效时间内完成text且正确率达到70%，课下完成home reading .
教学内容： stand for, speak for themselves, the ups and downs of prefixes, suffixes and root words, nonsense word, trace back, poke fun at, boondoggle, chortle, knockdown argument; Reading skills, Newspapers and headlines；Testing, Home Reading.
重点：培养学生的阅读技巧和阅读速度。
难点：概括性句子和细节性句子并掌握Newspaper and Headlines的阅读技巧。
Unit 2 基本要求：正确理解text ，掌握Understanding Headline Vocabulary 的阅读技巧；有效时间内完成text且正确率达到70%，课下完成home reading .
教学内容：Reserve, ill-bred, generosity and hospitality, conceited, self-deprecation, live up to, out of date, keep pace with, take their place, be entitled to, Reading skills, Understanding Headline, vocabulary such as short words, abbreviations, shortened words and slang；Testing.
重点：课文中的某些字、词、句子以及作者所要表达的中心思想。 难点：句子成分的划分和过渡段的作用并掌握Understanding Headline Vocabulary 的阅读技巧。
Unit 3 基本要求：正确理解text ,并在有效时间内完成Testing 且达到70%正确率。
教学内容： Rack one’s brains, be content with, map out, aside from, at a loss, from the perspective of sb, change blindness, psychokinetic, scramble, get to grips with, no sleight of；Testing, Home reading .
重点：培养学生的阅读技巧和阅读速度。 难点：概括性句子和细节性句子。
Unit 4 基本要求：正确理解text ，掌握The Newspaper Lead 的阅读技巧；有效时间内完成text且正确率达到70%，课下完成home reading .
教学内容：stand by, take responsibility for, suffered a concussion on errands, go through, baby boom, in parallel, access to adjust to, undeterred, incur obligation; Reading skills, The Newspaper lead；Testing, Home Reading.
重点：课文中的某些字、词、句子以及作者所要表达的中心思想。

Unit 5 基本要求：正确理解text ，掌握Reading the News Story的阅读技巧；有效时间内完成text且正确率达到70%，课下完成home reading .
教学内容：set foot on, on account of, run the risk of, confide in hypothermia, wane, give away, succumb to, piece together mesmerize; Reading skills-Read the News story；Testing, Home Reading.
重点：培养学生的阅读技巧和阅读速度。

Unit 6 基本要求：正确理解text ,并在有效时间内完成Testing 且达到70%正确率。

基本要求：正确理解text ，掌握Popular Magazines and Magazines Articles的阅读技巧；有效时间内完成text且正确率达到70%，课下完成home reading .
教学内容： Go through, hazard of smoking, precautions against falling into tobacco abuse, be hooked on, accuse sb of sth, turn sth /sb down, Don’t be chicken, steer the conversation to, contribute to, self-destructive behavior, anti-smoking inoculation, well-being, Reading skills –popular Magazines and Magazine Articles; Testing and Home Reading.
重点：培养学生的阅读技巧和阅读速度。
难点：概括性句子和细节性句子，掌握Popular Magazines and Magazines Articles的阅读技巧。
Unit 9 基本要求：正确理解text ,并在有效时间内完成Testing 且达到70%正确率。

基本要求：正确理解text ，掌握Reading Instructions的阅读技巧；有效时间内完成text且正确率达到70%，课下完成home reading .

Unit 12 基本要求：正确理解text ,并在有效时间内完成Testing 且达到70%正确率。

基本要求：正确理解text ，掌握Reading the Administrative的阅读技巧；有效时间内完成text且正确率达到70%，课下完成home reading .

重点：培养学生的阅读技巧和阅读速度。

Unit 15 基本要求：正确理解text ,并在有效时间内完成Testing 且达到70%正确率。

五、考核方法与要求：
本学科的考试目的主要考察学生的阅读理解能力。考试分为两大部分。期末试卷为书面考试，卷面成绩100分，占学期总评成绩的85%。平时成绩包括出勤、上课回答问题、作业及平时小测验的成绩。
1、平时成绩（15％）：包括出勤，上课回答问题，作业及平时小测验。 2、期末考试成绩（85％）。
3、综合考试成绩＝平时成绩×15％ ＋期末成绩 ×85％。
