Imagine a world in which there was suddenly no emotion – a world in which human beings could feel no love or happiness, no terror or hate. Try to imagine the consequences of such a transformation. People might not be able to stay alive: knowing neither joy nor pleasure, neither anxiety nor fear, they would be as likely to repeat acts that hurt them as acts that were beneficial. They could not learn: they could not benefit from experience because this emotionless world would lack rewards and punishments. Society would soon disappear: people would be as likely to harm one another as to provide help and support. Human relationships would not exist: in a world without friends or enemies, there could be no marriage, affection among companions, or bonds among members of groups. Society's economic underpinnings (支柱) would be destroyed: Since earning $ 10 million would be no more pleasant than earning $10, there would be no incentive to work. In fact, there would be no incentives of any kind. For as we will see, incentives imply a capacity to enjoy them.
In such a world, the chances that the human species would survive are next to zero, because emotions are the basic instrument of our survival and adaptation. Emotions structure the world for us in important ways. As individuals, we categorize objects on the basis of our emotions. True we consider the length, shape, size, or texture, but an object’s physical aspects are less important than what it has done or can do to us—hurt us, surprise us, anger us or make us joyful. We also use categorizations colored by emotions in our families, communities, and overall society. Out of our emotional experiences with objects and events comes a social feeling of agreement that certain things and actions are \"good\" and others are \"bad\and we apply these categories to every aspect of our social life—from what foods we eat and what clothes we wear to how we keep promises and which people our group will accept. In fact, society exploits our emotional reactions and attitudes, such as loyalty, morality, pride, shame, guilt, fear and greed, in order to maintain itself. It gives high rewards to individuals who perform important tasks such as surgery, makes heroes out of individuals for unusual or dangerous achievements such as flying fighter planes in a war, and uses the legal and penal(刑法的)system to make people afraid to engage in antisocial acts. 72. The reason why people might not be able to stay alive in a world without emotion is that _________. A. they would not be able to tell the texture of objects
B. they would not know what was beneficial and what was harmful
C. they would not be happy with a life without love D. they would do things that hurt each other's feelings
73. It can be inferred from the passage that the economic foundation of society is dependent on ________. A. the ability to make money B. the will to work for pleasure
C.the capacity to enjoy motivations D. the categorizations of our emotional experience 74. Emotions are significant for man's survival and adaptation because ________. A. they provide the means by which people view the size or shape of objects
B. they are the basis for the social feeling of agreement by which society is maintained C. they encourage people to perform dangerous achievements D. they generate more love than hate among people 75. The emotional aspects of an object are more important than its physical aspects because they . A. help society exploit its members for profit B. encourage us to perform important tasks C. help to perfect the legal and penal system
D. help us adapt our behavior to the world surrounding us Section C (5’)

Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraph. There is one
extra heading which you do not need. (F=A+B) A. A great drain on energy B. Expensive transportation C. Extra cost D. Market history E. Making a profit F. Demand for the water 76. The cost of transporting water is determined largely by how far it has to be carried and how high it has to be lifted. Growing cities and towns may have to go hundreds of kilometers to find the water needed to satisfy their increasing thirst. California cities have long imported water from hundreds of kilometers away. And China is constructing three canals that are 1,156 kilometers, 1,267 kilometers, and 260 kilometers long to transfer water from the Yangtze River to Beijing and other rapidly growing areas in the northern provinces. 77. Pumping water out of the ground or over land to higher elevations is energy-intensive. Pumping 480 cubic meters of water a height of 100 meters requires some 200 kilowatt-hours of electricity. At a price of 10¢ per kilowatt-hour, the cost is $20—not including the cost of the pump, the well, and the piping. One hundred meters is not an unusual lift for wells tapping falling supplies of groundwater. In Beijing and other areas in northern China, for instance, lifts of 1,000 meters are sometimes required. 78. In most places water is not purchased or exchanged in a market. But formal water markets are developing in the western United States, Australia, and Chile. Where these water markets do exist, they provide examples of how high the scarcity value of the water—that is, the amount that other potential users would be willing to pay for it—can be. Water prices in Australia’s markets peaked at near 75¢ per cubic meter in December 2006, climbing 20-fold in a year in part due to prolonged drought. In the U.S. West, water prices typically range between 3 cents and 10 cents per cubic meter. 79. In India, water scarcity has prompted some farmers to profit by selling their water instead of farming. The water they formerly used to irrigate their crops is instead pumped from their wells and trucked to nearby cities. The farmers are harvesting water rather than food and at the same time promoting a rapid drop in underground water tables. 80 Another factor affecting how much people pay for water is the amount it is subsidized(补助). Water subsidies can be very large. For instance, water revenues in the city of Delhi are less than 20 percent of what it spends each year to provide water. On average worldwide, nearly 40 percent of municipal suppliers do not charge enough for water to meet their basic operation and maintenance costs.
Section D (8’)
Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.
The old-fashioned general store is fast disappearing. This is, perhaps, a pity, because shopping today seems to lack that personal contact which existed when the shopkeeper knew all his regular customers personally. He could, for instance, remember which brand of tea Mrs. Smith usually bought or what sort of washing-powder Mrs. Jones preferred. Not only was the shop a center of buying and selling, but also a social meeting place.
A prosperous general store might have employed four or five assistants, and so there were very few problems in management as far as the staff were concerned. But now that the supermarket has replaced the general store, the job of the manager has changed completely. The modern supermarket manager has to cope with a staff of as many as a hundred, apart from all the other everyday problems of running a large business.
7
Every morning the manager must, like the commander of an army division, carry out an inspection of his store to make sure that everything is ready for the business of the day. He must see that everything is running smoothly. He will have to give advice and make decisions as problems arise, and he must know how to get his huge staff to work efficiently with their respective responsibilities. No matter what he has to do throughout the day, however, the supermarket manager must be ready for any emergency that may arise. They say in the trade that you are not really an experienced supermarket manager until you have dealt with a flood, a fire, a birth and a death in your store. (Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)
81. The shopkeeper was often the most well-informed person in the neighborhood because _____________. 82. As far as we know, science has brought many changes to the whole society, especially to our lives in recent ears. And at the same time the debate regarding the good and evil effects of science has gained wide attention. It is hardly too much to say that science is the most important factor in the progression of human beings. The great development in the field of medicine has served to lengthen our life expectancy, and the discovery of better seeds and pest control have worked to increase productivity levels in agriculture. In transportation, the railway, modern ships, jet planes and motor vehicles have made our life more and more comfortable and have provided convenient tools for commercial development. The computer, which is considered as the greatest invention in this century, is playing an important role in our daily life. On the other hand, however, science also gives us lots of problems. The modern industry has caused pollution and energy crisis. The nuclear bomb has threatened our existence. And a more serious fact is that some computer prodigies have been sent into prison for computer crimes. Despite all this, we still spare no effort for the development of science and technology. Maybe it is really true that everything has double sides.

Directions: In Section B, you will hear two short passages, and you will be asked three questions on each of the passages. The passages will be read twice but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.
Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.
When my husband was promoted, we put our old house up for sale. Three weeks later, it was still on the market. I became a busy housekeeper. Every room had to be kept tidy, and the dishes had to be washed and put away after each meal. Then one day the doorbell rang unexpectedly at 8 a.m. Sleepily, I opened the door and saw our agent standing there with a couple from New York. \"There was no time to call,\" he explained, \"because the couple had to catch a plane home.\"
The three people made their way past the dirty breakfast dishes on the kitchen table and into the bedroom with unmade beds. As I retreated into a bathroom to comb my hair, I heard the man say something to his wife. Then they both laughed.
Two days later, the agent phoned to tell me that the couple decided to buy the house. He repeated what the buyer had said when he handed over the check the following day: \"That house has a warm feeling, just like ours.\" 11. Why did the speaker sell her house?
12. Why did the agent visit the speaker so early in the morning? 13. Why did the couple laugh in the speaker's house?
Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.
Talk on the phone while you're driving? Fix your makeup? Check e-mail? You're not alone. A survey released on Monday shows 81 percent of Americans do more than just drive when they're behind the wheel. More than eight of 10 people surveyed by Nationwide Mutual Insurance said they adjust the radio or music while they drive, while 73 percent talk on the phone, 68 percent eat, 19 percent send text messages and 5 percent checked their e-mail. \"Clearly Americans have much to do and little time to do it, so to cope with that we've become multi-taskers,\" said Bill White, associate vice president of Safety at Nationwide. The problem with that is driving requires focus, and multi-tasking while driving puts you and your fellow drivers at risk. Younger drivers multi-task the most, Bill said the consequences for young drivers are severe, with car accidents being the number one cause of death for Americans aged 18 to 27. \"The bottom line is if it can’t be done in the kitchen, bathroom, office or bedroom, it should not be done in the car,\" Bill said.
14. According to the report how many people talk on the phone while driving? 15. What is the problem with multi-tasking while driving?
16. What is Bill White’s attitude towards multi-tasking while driving? Section C
Directions: In Section C, you will hear two longer conversations. The conversations will be read twice. After you hear each conversation, you are required to fill in the numbered blanks with the information you have heard. Write your answers on your answer sheet.
Blanks 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation. W: Hello! NEC Computers. May I help you?
M: Yes, this is Jake Green from Champion Office Supplies. May I speak to Ms. Wang, Please? W: I’m sorry, but she is not in right now. May I take your message?
M: Yes. Ms. Wang sent me your new year supply of laptop computers with description of other software products,
but there wasn’t any information about after-sales service.
W: Oh, I’m sorry. I’ll remind her to fax that to you as soon as possible.
M: That’ll be fine. Could you tell her to fax the information around 2:30 this afternoon? That will give me the time
to look over the material before I report to my boss, say, around 4 p.m. W: OK. May I have your telephone number and fax number, please? M: Sure, the phone number is 560-1827; the fax number is 560-3631. W: All right. I’ll tell Ms. Wang when she gets back. M: Thank you. Bye!
Blanks 21 through 24 are based on the following conversation. M: Susan, what’s that in your hand?
W: Come on, Dong, haven’t you seen a cigarette before? Every day in the United States, about 1,500 girls begin
smoking, and I figured why not do my share?
M: But don’t you know the tobacco kills more than 140,000 women each year? W: Yeah, but that’s why I smoke light cigarettes.
M: But do you know that smoking a light cigarette is just as risky as smoking a regular one? W: I didn’t know that.
M: The one thing you can say about tobacco companies is that they are really smart about marketing. Tobacco
commercials for man focus on cigarettes as cool while tobacco commercials for women focus on social and political things. For example, ads will say that you’ve come a long way or that you’ve found your voice or encourage you to just be yourself as if smoking has anything to do with progress and self-expression. W: So, Dong, can you pass me that ashtray?
M: With pleasure, Susan, as long as you put it out.
