I’m looking for a few days’ work.” said the carpenter. “ Perhaps you would have a few small jobs here and there I could help with?”

Tem heard a noise and stopped to listen. When he heard it again, he ran towards the noise, and saw an old man lying among the wildflowers. It looked as though he’d been bitten by a wolf or a bear. “Are you all right?” he asked, raising the man’s head.
The old man coughed. “My arms and legs. The wolves. Attacked. Help me.” he cried and then passed out. The man was bleeding heavily from many bites. Tem tore some strips (布条) from his shirt and tied them around the wounds. He didn’t dare move him, for fear the wolves would come back and finish him off.
He could hear the wolves howling (嚎叫) again. He stayed with the man all night. When the sun came up in he morning the old man opened his eyes. “Who are you?” he asked. Tem woke up. “I’m Tem. I’m from the Romacamp, over the hill. I found you last night.”
“Ah, boy. I am Roma too. I was on my way to another camp to play my violin (小提琴) when three wolves came. I am lucky to be alive. My name is Garridan.” The old man attempted a smile and held Tem’s hand. “Where is my violin?” he asked.
“Violin? I didn’t see one.” Tem answered. He stood up and walked around in the grass and flowers, looking for it., “Here it is.” He carried it to Garridan. “It’s beautiful. It’s much heavier than my papa’s.”
“It belonged to my grandfather, and his grandfather before him. It’s priceless, and its music, ah... there is none more beautiful.” Garridan said.
“I think you should come to our camp. My mans and papa will be waking up soon. When they find me gone, they will worry. Thye’ll take care of your wounds. How many things can you see in the night sky? A lot! On a clear night you might see the Moon, some planets, and thousands of shining stars. You can see even more with a telescope (望远镜).
But scientists believe there are some things in the sky that we will never see. We won’t see them with the biggest telescope in the world, on the clearest night of the year. They’re dead stars called black holes.
You might find it hard to imagine that stars die. After all, our Sun is a star. Year after year we see it up in the sky, burning brightly, giving us hat an light. The Sun certainly doesn’t seem to be getting old or weak. But stars do burn out and die after billions of years.
As a war’s gases burn, they give off light and heat. But when the gas runs out, the star stops burning and begins to die
As the star cools, the outer parts of the star pull in toward the center. The star squashes (挤压) into a smaller and smaller ball. If the star was very small, it ends up as a cold, dark ball. If the star was very big, it keeps squashing inward until it’s packed together tighter than anything in the universe.
Imagine if the Earth were crushed until it was the size of a tiny stone. That’s how tightly this dead star, a black hole, is packed. What pulls the star in toward its center with such power? It’s the same force that pulls you down when you jump – the force called gravity (引力). A black hole is so tightly packed that its gravity pulls in everything – even light. The light from a black hole can never come back to your eyes. That’s why you see nothing but blackness.
So the next time you stare up at the night sky, remember, there’s more in the sky than meets the eye!
39. When will a star begin to die? A. When it burns brightly.
B. When it becomes too hot. D. When it gives off light and heat.
5
C. Go to see a doctor in the hospital.
C. When it runs out of its gasses.
40. What do we know about black hole? A. They are nice to watch at night. C. They are heavier than the sun. 41. What will happen when a star cools? A. It has a hole inside. C. It loses its gravity.
