When you listen to your favorite songs, you probably admire the singer or the musicians you're hearing. Those talented musical performers, however, are only some of the people involved in making the music you enjoy. Most people in the music industry work \"behind the scenes\
Songwriters
Before you can hear a song, a songwriter must imagine it Some songwriters work alone, but many songwriting teams include someone who writes the song’s words, and another person who writes the music. Pop music legend Elton John’s best-known songs, including Tiny Dancer and Your Song, were written to accompany the words of Bernie Taupin, whose name you might not know.
Arrangers
After a song has been written, music arrangers make it more appealing by deciding which instruments will be used, what speed the song will have, and the song’s pitch. A good arrangement can make a song a “classic” that people will remember and want to hear again and again.
Recording Engineers
Recording engineers also play a major role in creating the final sound that you hear. First, they set up the recording studio, the room where the performers play. Next, they use electronic equipment to record the music. Finally, long after the musicians have finished, recording engineers use a mixing board to balance the sounds of each musician, and sometimes to incorporate special sound effects or additional tracks.
Studio Musicians
Many talented singers and musicians aren’t stars, but work in the background as studio musicians. These artists aren’t members of one musical group. Instead, they are hired for recording sessions that eventually become the music you buy, as well as the music used in television shows, movies, and radio ads.
Many people make a living with music. You may not recognize all of their names, but all of them work together to create the songs you love to listen to. 1.What is the best title for this passage? A.The People Behind the Music C.How Music Is Made

4.What is true about studio musicians? A.They often appear on TV shows. C.They decide what songs to play.

When my daughter was in primary school, one day she brought home 4 tiny trees, which were given to the students by the school to plant. None of them looked very strong but with a hope for the future.
I planted them in our backyard. Over the years an accident brought an end to three of them. All that was left was a weak tree. It grew very slowly and never got very tall. I noticed a few years ago that it was starting to die. The needles on the branches had turned brown. Only the top third of the tree was still green.
Last summer I did my best to save it but it was useless. This morning I went out and looked at it again. I was deciding on whether it would be better to just cut it down.
As I walked over to take a closer look at it, however, I noticed something moving within the needles. It was a bird patiently building a nest in the top branches.
I smiled when I looked at it and decided that maybe this old tree had some life and usefulness left in it yet. It may not be healthy or pretty but it was still giving a bird a home and oxygen (氧气) to this world.
This tree reminded me of something too. All of our lives have purpose. All of our lives have meaning. It doesn’t matter if we are young and strong or old and sickly. Until our last breath there are things for us to do, love for us to give, and joy for us to share. Until our last moment here we can help to make this world a better and more beautiful place. 1.None of the tiny trees looked ______.
A.short B.tall C.weak D.strong
2.A few years later, ______ of the trees still grew slowly in the backyard. A.one
B.two
C.three
D.four
3.The writer did not cut down the tree because ______. A.it was still a young tree C.it was growing very well
B.it was giving a bird home D.it was an old and big tree

15、What do people drink in Western countries? They drink coffee, of course. Tea is the drink of us Chinese. Think again. In the West, tea is seeing to be cool again.
In Western countries like the UK, coffee used to be the fashionable drink. Jenny Northam, a 28-year-old English woman, remembers that ten years ago tea was unfashionable. “At that time young people didn’t like tea. We thought drinking tea was uncool and old-fashioned. Tea was____something we only drank when visiting grandparents.”
Several years ago US____Madonna, who lived in Britain, published a children’s book____called The English Roses. She launched the book with a tea party. Since Madonna is the “Queen of Cool”, she took a big part in making tea fashionable. The British tradition of afternoon tea was fashionable again.
In Britain, hotels accept bookings (预定) for afternoon tea weeks in advance. The trend (趋向) had also taken off in the US. In New York and Los Angeles, more and more cafes are serving tea.
The tea craze is not only down to Madonna, of course. People drink tea because they connect it with the idea of living life at a slower pace.

16、It was at least two months before Christmas when nine-year-old Almie Rose told her father and me that she wanted a new bicycle. As Christmas drew nearer, her desire for a bicycle seemed to fade(消退), or so we thought. We bought her a lovely doll, and a doll house. Then, much to our surprise, on December 23rd, she said that she “really wanted a bike more than anything else.” But it was just too late. With such a lot of preparations to do for the Christmas dinner we did not have the time to buy our little girl a bike. So, here we were Christmas Eve around 9:00 p.m., with Almie and her six-year-old brother, Dylan, sleeping in their beds. Now we could only think of the bicycle and the disappointment of our child. “What if I make a little bicycle out of clay (泥) and write a note that she could trade the clay bike in for a real bike?” her dad asked. So he spent the next four hours making a tiny clay bike. On Christmas morning, we were excited for Almie to open the little gift box with the beautiful red and white clay bike and the note. Finally, she opened it and read the note aloud. “Does this mean that I can trade in this bike that Daddy made me for a real one?” I said, “Yes.” Almie had tears in her eyes when she replied, “I could never trade in this beautiful bicycle that Daddy made me. I'd rather keep this than get a real bike.” At that moment, we would have moved heaven and earth to buy her every bicycle in the world!
