A
Many cities have subways and underground public transportation to take locals and tourists alike rapidly around the city. However, there’s something different about riding a London subway. It may not look different, but the historical value of one of England’s most popular forms of transportation is enough to make riding the subway a must when visiting London. With a little under 100 different stations, the subway can take you almost anywhere you need to go.
Riding a London subway, a person from other countries will notice one major difference: in London, people do not look at each other. In fact, eye contact is avoided at all times. That’s not rudeness―people are just too busy to bother looking.
Busy doing what, you ask? Well, they’re certainly not using the time for a moment of quiet thinking.Nor are they reading a book.New technology has replaced quiet habits.Today the only acceptable form of book on the London underground is an e-book.
Apple must earn a fortune from London commuters(使用月票上下班者).Since the launch of the iPhone in 2007, over 40,000―yes, that’s 40,000 “apps” have been designed.
Commuters love them because they are the perfect time-fillers.One ―app‖, called iShoot, is a game that features tanks.Another one, Tube Exits, tells passengers where to sit on the train to be closest to the exit of their destination.iSteam clouds the iPhone screen when you breathe into the microphone. You can then write in the ―steam‖ on your phone screen.
For those without an iPhone, another Apple product, the iPod, may be the distraction(消遣)of choice. It’s not just teenagers who “plug in” to their music-iPods are a popular way to pass the time for all ages.
And if games, e-books and music aren’t enough to keep you occupied, then perhaps you would prefer a film? The development of palm DVD technology means many commuters watch their favorite TV shows or films on the way to work. With all these distractions, it’s amazing that people still remember to get off the train. 1.Those who want to save time to reach where they go can download ______ to their iPhones. A.iShoot B.Tube Exits C.iSteam D.iPod 2.People in London do not make eye contact on the subway because ______. A.they are going to work and have no time to communicate with each other B.they love reading books and do not want to be disturbed C.they feel sleepy because of getting up early
D.they are busy playing games, reading e-books, listening to music or watching films 3.The underlined word ―apps‖ in the fourth paragraph means ______. A.computers B.programs downloaded for the iPhone C.computer companies D.fortune from London commuters 4..The main idea of the passage is that ______. A.London commuters are unfriendly to strangers
B.Apple has earned a lot of money from selling 40,000 apps
C.technology is changing how London commuters spend their traveling time D.riding a London subway is a must when visiting London

When Peng Liyuan stepped off the plane in Moscow, the whole world wanted to know who dressed the elegant first lady. The reporter released the secret—Ma Ke.
Peng Liyuan has been wearing Ma Ke's designs for more than a decade, a fact that was only highlighted recently when she was on her first state visit, accompanying her husband President Xi Jinping. The elegant and attractive Peng, formerly a popular singer, has been compared with the US’ first lady Michelle Obama and France’s Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, since stepping off the airplane in Moscow on March 22. Suddenly, everyone was curious to know more about the first lady’s wardrobe.
Even so, Ma prefers a low-key approach. ―If you eat a tasty egg why would you want to see the hen?‖ she says of all the media attention.
Ma’s relationship with Peng began 10 years ago after a concert in Guangzhou when a reporter told Peng she knew the designer behind the label Exception de Mixmind. Peng asked for an introduction because she was a fan of Ma’s designs and had been wearing them for years.
The two naturally became friends. Ma says: ―The painting reflects the painter, and clothes reflect both the designer and the wearer. Someone desires fame and wealth, or love and sympathy; what you have in your heart is reflected in the design. Those who don’t share my philosophy won’t buy my clothes. Peng is a caring person, devoted to charity and environmental protection, which is exactly what I’m doing now.‖
However, regardless of the brand, Peng’s support of Chinese labels has surprised millions of Chinese who favor foreign fashion brands.
―Instead she presented a vision of Chinese fashion, desiring to bring Chinese designers to the world stage,‖ says a western designer.
The first lady’s double-breasted coat and her black leather handbag aren’t available at any of Exception’s shops, though Exception’s physical stores do have seen a rising number of visitors. 5.. The passage mainly discusses _________.
A. the designer of the first lady Peng Liyuan’s dress, Ma Ke B. the friendship between Peng Liyuan and her designer C. Peng Liyuan’s clothes on her first state visit
D. the reactions to Peng Liyuan’s first visit to Moscow
6.. In the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 Ma Ke mentioned ―an egg and the hen‖ to show _________. A. it is hard to explain ―Which came first, the egg or the hen?‖ B. paying such great attention to her was unnecessary C. the outcome was more important than the process
D. her dissatisfaction with the media attention on her dress 7.. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. First ladies compete with each other whenever they are together. B. Peng’s suits can be bought in Ma Ke’s clothes stores.
C. Ma Ke offered to design the first lady’s clothes through her friends.
D. Peng had liked Ma’s designs long before she got to know her in the flesh. 8.. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Peng wears the dress designed by a Chinese designer probably to support Chinese brands. B. Many citizens found Peng Liyuan’s choice quite unexpected.
C. Black leather handbags like Peng’s are widely sold in bag stores in big cities. D. After Peng Liyuan’s visit to Moscow Ma Ke’s clothes became more popular.

Going on holiday not only makes you feel good while you're there --- you gain the health benefits for months, new research shows.
Jetting off to exotic destinations such as the Maldives cuts your blood pressure, helps you sleep better and bounce back from stress, it found. The benefits last at least a fortnight longer than the vacation and can be felt for months in some cases where it is claimed. Experts say workers should always take their full holiday entitlement each year --- as many as one in three don’t --- to get the benefits.
The study compared key health markers in holidaymakers visiting Thailand, Peru or the Maldives, with
people who stayed at home and continued working. The average blood pressure of those on holiday dropped by six percent while the workers saw their blood pressure rise by two percent over the same period. The sleep quality of holidaymakers improved by 17 percent while that of the non-holidaymakers deteriorated by 14 percent. The study also found the ability of vacationers to recover from stress --- known as the stress-resilience test --- improved by 29 percent. There was a 71 percent fall in stress resilience scores among workers. Tests showed a fall in blood glucose levels, reducing the risk of diabetes, trimmer waistlines and enhanced mood and energy levels, with the effects sustained for at least two weeks after returning home.
The Holiday Health Experiment was conducted by tour operator Kuoni and Nuffield Health, the UK’s largest healthcare charity.
9.. According to the passage, how many people go on holiday? A. One third. B. Two thirds. C. 17 percent. D. A quarter. 10.. Which of the following can we infer from the passage? A. The further you go, the better the benefits.
B. Most people like to stay at home during the holiday.
C. Holiday makers are more adaptable than non-holidaymakers.
D. The result of the study is mostly based on the description from the people involved. 11.. The author intends to tell us that __________. A. we have to go on holiday as much as possible
B. you’ll certainly get depressed if you don’t go on holiday C. it is best to go to foreign countries like Maldives D. we had better go on holiday for the benefit of health 12.. The best title of the passage is ________ . A. Health Benefits from Holiday B. A Holiday Health Experiment
C. Health Problems of Having Holiday D. Key Health Markers in Holidaymakers

On Jan 23, 2012, I was aboard a ship on the Yangtze River, listening to the sound of fireworks and eating plate after plate of dumplings.
On Sunday Feb 10, 2013, I was preparing to celebrate Chinese New Year again — in London’s Chinatown. It was raining. It was cold. But ever since I left Beijing in August, I had promised myself I would celebrate Chinese New Year – if only to help with my Beijing ―homesickness‖.
Central London was dressed up for the occasion. There was a stage for a big fireworks display for the evening. Even so, it wasn’t like my real Beijing Chunjie.
Even buying a jiaozi didn’t cheer me up. It cost about 10 times as much as the real thing does in Beijing and got stuck to its rain-ruined paper bag.
Cold, wet and depressed, I ran into a shop for shelter. Suddenly, there it was. Between the packets of dried meat and fish, the bags of rice and the smell of dried noodles in this little Chinese supermarket, I had found home. An hour later, I hurried into my house with bags of frozen jiaozi, packets of sauce and a large bottle of vinegar. I boiled water, tore open the packets, grabbed my chopsticks and settled down to a feast. This, I thought, is a Happy Chinese New Year.
I even watched the fireworks on TV. After all, why face the British weather when I can bring China home in one bite?

Renaissance Reading:
The Accelerated Reader (AR) Program is a computerized reading enrichment program that combines great children’s literature with computer skills. As an individualized reading program, it is designed to motivate students to read more and to read good literature.Students of different abilities can use this program. It is not a competitive program but one that improves any student's reading ability.
Here is how it works.Students select books in their reading range from our Accelerated Reader Selection and read it at their own pace.Once the student has completed the book, he/she is ready to take an AR quiz. Each quiz consists of 5, 10, or 20 multiple choice comprehensive questions about the book.
After taking the quiz, the computer shows the student how many questions he/she answered correctly, shows the correct answers for missed questions, and praises the students' efforts with an on-screen personalized message.Passing the quiz assures the teacher and the parent that the child actually read and understood the book. Each student tests independently—reading the quiz questions himself/herself.
The computer keeps track of reading points, books, and average test scores, as well as other data.A student may test on a book only once and should, therefore, have thoroughly read and understood the contents before taking the quiz. Each student is responsible for reading the screen to be sure the quiz, by title and author, is the correct one he/she wishes to take.
Students are recognized for their accomplishments with praise from the teachers and special recognition at the classroom level when individual and/or classroom goals are met. P.T.0.

Childhood was an illusion (错觉)and the illusion was this: everything was bigger. No, I mean everything, not just houses and shops and grown-ups, but colors and flowers and journeys, especially journeys which seemed endless. ―Are we there yet, Daddy?‖

Funfairs (游乐场) were huge things that spread for miles around you with noise and lights and exciting danger. Rainy days at home when you were ill seemed to last for ever. Being a grown-up yourself was an unthinkable distant possibility. Every sound was louder, every game was grander, every pain unbearable.

I have only one repeatable and wonderful way and even in this way I can regain only part of that larger world. I can play upon the stage like a child and make the crowd laugh and laugh with them, sometimes helplessly like a child, and then, even though I’m a sixty-one-year-old man, I can almost catch the colors and sounds and stillness of those bigger years when I was little.

作文范文:
In China, children are the centre of each family . All parents wish their children, especially senior high
students, could go to top universities and have a bright future. So all the children are always expected to make full use of their time to study .They are not allowed to watch TV, play the computer games or go out to play with their friends .
Some students just complain that their parents are only concerned about their grades and not their other needs. They wish to have their own time to watch TV or surf the Internet. They also hope to chat or play with their friends.
In my opinion, our parents are responsible for us. Perhaps out of nothing but love, they are sometimes too strict with us. But I think we should learn to communicate with them, telling them that we’ll work harder and will never let them down. Only by doing this will we earn trust and respect from them.

It started out as a perfectly normal Thursday morning in February, 2010. I had eaten breakfast, tidied my room and packed my bag. I stepped out the door, hugged my mum goodbye and promised I wouldn’t be too late home. Weirdly(古怪地), it felt like it was going to be a good day. How wrong was I?
School was good and afterwards I walked home. When I was halfway down the road, I realized that Mum’s car was moving towards me. It wasn’t that weird, as she might have been just dropping off my sister at the book club. However, as the car pulled up for me to get in and I realized Mum’s eyes were red with tears. I knew something was wrong.
―We’ve had a fire,‖ Mum explained. Horrible images flooding into my head, I was assured that everyone in our family was fine, though.
It turned out that Mum had gone out and left our little Yorkshire Terrier, Trevor, in the house. She had then gone to the shop to buy cake mixture for Valentine’s Day and during this time, the dishwasher had overheated and caught fire. When she returned from the shops, she found the house had been destroyed by fire.
Fortunately, we had a holiday cottage that we were able to go to. After some emergency shopping, I had two T-shirts and two pairs of leggings to wear, but I felt empty and upset. My dog was the worst off by far. She was unconscious when the firemen found her and she’d swallowed a lot of smoke, but she was alive.
We were eventually able to rent a house in the area we had been living in before, but it was a painful struggle. My friends were incredibly supportive and I owe it to them. We have only just got back to normal and have bought another. I and my three sisters were spoilt rotten at Christmas by all our friends and family to make up for the possessions we lost in the fire. Thank you so much to everyone who has helped us in the past year. To you I will eternally grateful. 36. How did the author feel when leaving home that morning?
A. Strange B. Good C. Puzzled D. Bad 37. Seeing Mum’s car was moving towards her, the author _______. A. felt it was very strange
B. knew there was something bad had happened
C. thought her mum were driving to school to pick her up
D. thought her mum might have been taking her sister to the book club 38. What was the reason for the fire according to the text? A. The little Yorkshire Terrier. B. The dog C. The dishwasher D. The servant 39. What does the author mainly want to tell us in the last paragraph? A. Her friends are incredibly supportive.
B. Renting a house is really a painful struggle.
C. She is very grateful to the ones offering her family help
D. She and her three sisters were deeply loved by all their friends and family

According to body language expert Robert Phipps, the way people sleep at night actually determines a lot about the type of personality they have. In a new study on the topic, Phipps has identified four sleeping positions that affect personality.
Phipps found that worriers, those who stress the most, tend to sleep in the fetal(胎儿的) position. He found that this is by far the most common bedtime position, with nearly 58 percent of snoozers sleeping on their side with knees up and head down. The more we curl up(蜷曲), the more comfort we are seeking, according to Phipps.
The second most common position is the log. People who sleep with a straight body, with arms at each side, as if they are standing guard at Buckingham Palace, indicates stubbornness, and these people (the 28 percent who sleep this way) often wake up stiffer than when they went to sleep.
―The longer you sleep like this, the more rigid your thinking and you can become inflexible, which means you make things harder for yourself,‖ according to Phipps.
Yearner(向往型的) sleepers are next on the list. About 25 percent of people sleep in this style–on their backs with arms stretched out in front, looking as if they are either chasing a dream or perhaps being chased themselves. Yearners are typically their own worst critics, always expecting great results, explained Phipps. These people often wake up refreshed and eager to face the challenges of the day ahead.
Perhaps the most peculiar of sleep styles is the freefaller position. This sleep style makes up 17 percent of the population. They sleep face down with arms stretched out. These people, according to Phipps, feel like they have little control over their life. Not only is this the oddest of sleep styles, it also the least comfortable, and people may wake up feeling tired and have no energy.

These days, there are very few wild animals left in the UK. The wolves have gone. The bears have been hunted to extinction. Fortunately, there are a few badgers(獾)--- Oh, well, actually, not for long as the British government has just decided to kill them too! But why?
Badgers are fascinating creatures. The black and white mammals live underground in ―setts‖, which they dig out of the earth. They are extremely brave, fighting off larger animals such as bears and wolves. The problem is that some badgers carry ―Bovine Tuberculosis‖ (TB), an infectious disease which can cause TB in some other animals, including cattle.
For farmers, this is a serious issue. In 1998 in the UK, almost 6,000 cows were killed to control the disease. And in 2010, more than 30,000 animals were destroyed. It’s expensive too. Bovine TB costs the UK about £100 million per year. And some believe that the disease could end up costing the economy £9 billion over the next 40 years if nothing is done about it.
Experts say that badgers are responsible for about 50% of the infected cattle. So, after much debate, the government has agreed to a badger cull(杀戮). This will mean about 30,000 of the innocent creatures will be wiped out to fight the disease. Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman admitted that there was ―great strength of feeling‖ about it, but said, ―I believe this is the right way forward.‖
Of course, many are against the measure, including conservationists and animal rights activists. They claim that killing the badgers in controlled zones wouldn’t work because badgers from neighboring areas would simply move into the empty setts and become infected too. Furthermore, they believe that the way cattle are raised intensively, and transported around to lots of different farms during their lives is probably the biggest cause of the spread of the disease.
Most ordinary people are against the measure too. A survey suggests about two-thirds are against killing the badgers, with majorities against killing them regardless of age, region and gender. One of the alternatives to the cull involves using vaccine(疫苗) on badgers. However, this costs an average of £2,250 per year per square kilometer. Trapping and shooting badgers costs £2,500 per year, but shooting free-running badgers only costs about £200 per year (per square kilometer).
So, with that in mind, it’s easy to see how the government arrived at their decision. Money talks! 44. Why does the government want to kill the badgers?
A. Because there is no other choice to cut the spread of the disease.
B. Because badgers carry TB, a disease which can infect other animals. C. Because they almost wiped out an entire population of cattle.
D. Because it might be an effective way to fight TB at the least expense. 45. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Some people object to culling because it costs much more to trap and shoot badgers. B. In the following four decades, £9 billion will be spent on TB
C. Based on the survey, people of different age groups, regions and both genders are against killing the badgers.
D. Caroline Spelman thought badgers should be culled despite people’s strong reaction. 46. Who is strongly for killing the badgers according to the passage? A. The government. B. Most ordinary people. C. Conservationists. D. Animal rights activists. 47. What is the author’s attitude toward government’s decision?
A. Supportive B. Critical C. Doubtful D. Unconcerned

My daughter is a junior in high school and has been on an individualized education program since fourth grade. She plans to go to college and intends to finish with a master’s degree. Her performance in general is fairly good, but test scores are very low. She has held many leadership and volunteer positions. We have been advised to have her write an essay about how her learning disability is a barrier that she has to get over. Will that help or hurt her chances for admission?
--- Deborah
First let me answer the question on low standardized test scores (ACT/SAT). There are hundreds of colleges that are ―test optional‖ which means students can choose not to release their test scores in the application process. Admission decisions at these colleges for students who do not submit their test scores are made based on other factors. A list of test optional colleges can be found at fairtest.org. It is important, however, to make sure that the college is the right fit academically regardless of the test optional policy.
You also asked if your daughter should write about her disability and if this would hurt her chances of being admitted. Please know that colleges do not deny admission based on disability. ―Disclosing‖(透露) a learning disability in a personal statement within the college application can certainly help. By writing a personal statement, students can potentially demonstrate, for example, their understanding of the challenge they face. They might also prove an improved grade trend in that subject area, and show interest in more complex courses in spite of this disability. More importantly, a student disclosure can show self-confidence, motivation and an understanding of the disability.

My son is still very young but he has an expressive language disorder. It took me more than two years of speech therapy for him to be able to learn to speak at the same level as his 2-year-old brother. He is very smart, but he struggles with language. Unfortunately, many schools require four semesters of foreign language to get in or to graduate. Can these requirements ever be waived for someone like my son?

One possible version: Dear Jack,
I’m glad to receive your letter, and thank you for your caring for the weather and my health. Now I’d like to tell you something about the haze. Since the end of last year, the hazy weather has occurred a lot of times in my hometown, which has done great harm to our daily life. Many traffic accidents happened just because of the heavy smog. Besides, more and more citizens have to go to see the doctor due to the serious diseases caused by the haze. A great number of people have to stay at home for fear of the poisonous air.
Having realized the great harm caused by the haze and the importance of protecting the environment, people all over the country are taking measures to reduce the hazy weather. The government suggests that people go to work or school by public transport, such as the bus and the underground.
As for me, I will go to school by bike or on foot, and I won’t throw the waste anywhere. In addition, I will tell the people I meet to protect the environment. Would you like to tell me some good ideas? I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours, Zhang Hua
