13、Getting electricity(电)has always been a problem for the 173 people living in Nuevo Saposoa, a small village in Peru, South America. However, things went from bad to worse in March 2015 after heavy rains damaged(损坏)the only power cables(电缆)in the area. The villagers were forced to use oil lamps, which are not only expensive but also dangerous because of the harmful gases they produce.

Luckily, researchers at the University of Technology(UT)in Lima, Peru heard about their problem and found a wonderful solution(解决方法).They made a lamp that can be powered by plants and soil, both of which can be easily found in the Amazonian rainforest where the village lies. The lamp takes energy from a plant growing in a wooden box and uses it to light up an LED light bulb.

While that may sound amazing and even impossible, the science behind the idea is quite simple. As plants create their food (using the sun's energy, water and chemicals from the soil ),they also produce waste which they return to the soil. Tiny animals in the soil eat this waste and they produce electrons一the building blocks of electrical energy. The UT team put special sticks inside the soil to get the energy and keep it in the lamp's batteries for later use. The researchers say a single charge can power a 50-watt LED light for two hours 一enough time for local villagers to get their evening work done.

The university gave ten Plant Lamps to the villagers of Nuevo Saposoa in October 2015. So far, they have been a huge success! Elmer Ramirez, the UT professor who invented the lamp, believes the Plant Lamp could help improve the lives

15、April will bring a new product – the Apple Watch – into the market. Last week, the watch was firstly introduced by Tim Cook, Apple's CEO. The price of the watch will differ from $349 to $1,099, depending on its size, strap and whether it is a sports or regular version.

Apple engineers and designers have put in a lot of thought and hard work into creating this \"small screen\" on your wrist(手腕). The \"sensor\" on the screen not only detects your finger, but knows the difference between when you are tapping, and when you are pressing harder.

The watch also has “haptic feedback(触觉反馈)”. You can send personal messages to your friend, such as drawing a star or a special sign with your fingers, or tapping the watch, say 3 times, and your friend will receive those taps on their wrist.

Besides telling the time, the watch will use 'bluetooth' to connect with your iPhone and show calls or text messages that come in.

According to Tim Cook, the watch may open up a whole new area of applications that we had never thought of. Some car factories like BMW have developed an app that allows its car owners to open their cars with the watch. A 'Hotels'

app may allow you to open the door to your hotel room without worrying about losing the smart-card. And finally, even airlines are jumping in--passengers may be able to simply wave their wrist to check into their flight.

The biggest use of the watch, however, is as your personal fitness coach. The watch can measure your pulse (heartbeat) using a sensor at the bottom of the watch. It also has the same \"accelerometer\" as your iPhone, so it knows when you are moving, and also how much you are walking or running. It will remind you if you have been sitting for too long without much activity.

16、From 2016, Children in Finland would not be taught cursive handwriting. Instead of learning this skill, schools would be given the choice to teach keyboard typing in its place. The change shows typing skills are now more related than handwriting, but experts say the move could do harm to a child’s brain development.

“Most people would agree that everyone should at least be able to pick up a pen or a pencil and write a message

that others can read,”said Misty Adoniou, a lecturer.“But beyond legibility(易读性), does it matter how you form your letters when you handwrite?”

She continued there was research connecting fluent handwriting with better written articles,“but the key isn’t (流畅的)the quality, form or style of the handwriting, but rather the automaticity(自动性) of the handwriting.”

Reports have also found that by the age of eight, children can already type faster than they can handwrite. But, as Misty Adoniou agreed, handwriting can play an important part in brain development.“Research shows that learning to write in cursive further improves students’ motor and visual skills, eye-to-handco ordination, hand and finger (视觉的)skills, and brain development. The physical act of handwriting also helps the memory of information and the flow(流动)of ideas.”

For example, in a recent study, researchers did brain scans on five-year-olds before and after receiving different letter-learning tasks. In children who practiced writing letters by hand, the neural activity was more improved (神经的)and“aduit-like”than in those who had simply looked at letters. “Technology can encourage and support plenty of child development and educational objectives, such as physical and health、”explained Dr.Leves, “And there is a body of research supporting the idea that children learn best when they’re having fun.”

But as Ms Adoniou concluded:“With so many things to do in a school day, it is hard to see why handwriting lessons continue. No matter how standardized we try to make handwriting, we all end up with our own style. Perhaps we’d do just all well to let children find their own style.”

1.Ms Adoniou probably agrees that you will write articles better when _____. A.you care less about your handwriting B.you have a special style of handwriting C.you improve the quality of handwriting D.you have different forms of handwriting

2.According to Ms Adoniou, cursive handwriting _____. A.improves children’s eyesight B.makes children’s hands strong C.makes children have fewer ideas D.helps children’s brains develop better 3.What is the passage mainly about _____? A.How to teach keyboard typing. B.The reasons why students drop pens. C.Some opinions on cursive handwriting.

D.How to improve your own writing style.

18、Years ago, I lived in a building in a large city. The building next door was only a few feet away from mine. There was a woman who lived there, whom I had never met, yet I could often see her sit by her window, sewing or reading.

After several months, I began to notice that her window was dirty. Everything was unclear through the dirty

window. I would say to myself, “I wonder why that woman doesn’t clean her window. It really looks terrible.”

One bright morning I decided to clean my flat, including the windows.

Late in the afternoon when I finished the cleaning, I sat down by the window with a cup of coffee for a rest. What a surprise! The woman sitting by her window was clearly visible. Her window was clean!

Then it dawned on me. I had been criticizing (批评) her dirty window, but all the time I was watching hers through my own dirty window.

That was quite an important lesson for me. How often had I looked at and criticized others through the dirty window of my heart, through my own shortcomings?

Since then, whenever I wanted to judge (评判) someone, I asked myself first, “Am I looking at him through my own dirty window?”

Then I try to clean the window of my own world so that I may see the world about me more clearly. 1.The writer tells us that the woman ________.

Nice to hear from you. As a middle school student, I’m always ready to help others.

I still remember I helped a girl with her maths when we were in Grade Eight. Li Hong, one of my classmates, was not good at maths, but I did well. So one day, I went to help her . Her big smile made me feel good. From then on, whenever she had problems, she would ask me for help, and I was patient to explain them to her. Little by little, her maths improved with my help. At the same time, I found my maths better too.

Everyone may have trouble in life and we should help each other. In fact, helping others is helping ourselves.

Yours Zhang Hua
