T Revise the techniques learnt in Lesson 2 to conclude a paragraph.
T: There two ways to boil a paragraph down. One is “brief”, using as few words as possible; another is “descriptive”, offering important information. T: Now try the “brief” to conclude the text. Virtual reality in the courtroom: Lawyers usually use photos to try to explain the mechanics of a crime or an accident to a jury. It is challenging to show the judge and jury what actually happened at a crime scene or at the precise moment of impact during a serious accident. With VR, lawyers are now able to transport them directly into the scene of the crime or accident.
Virtual reality in sport: Athletes use this technology to fine-tune certain aspects of their performance and VR is also used in the design of sporting clothes and equipment, such as running shoes. Step 3 Find out reference
T: To understand the precise meaning of a reading material, we have to dig out the reference of a noun or a pronoun. Here are some sentences from the text. Let’s explore what the underlined nouns or pronouns refer to.
1. It really boils down to three things —— time, cost, and technical limitation. We will need time to develop and fine-tune the hardware and software. The initial cost will discourage most people in the beginning but that should be fixed over time. (Lines 45-46 P54) T: What does “The initial cost” refer to?
Answer: Time, cost and technical limitation. T: What does “that” refer to? Answer: the initial cost.
2. Fox example, 5G technology, with its potential to serve up more stable mobile connectivity at faster speed, will make it possible for people to enjoy a more immersive VR experience wherever they are. (Lines 54-57 P54) T: What do the three underlined parts refer to?
Answers: The word “its” refers to “(of) 5G technology”. The word “it” is formal object, referring to the actual object “to enjoy a more immersive VR experience”. The word “they” refers to “people”. 【设计意图:指代关系是阅读难点之一,准确理解名词和代词的指代是顺利理解上下文的前提。本文中多处出现复杂的指代,需要借助文理、语法才能准确理解】
Step 4 Analyse the complex sentences
T: There’re some complex sentences in the text. To get accuracy of the meaning, you have to analyse their components.
T helps Ss to find out some complex sentences and ask some of them to analyse their components. 1. When you wear a VR headset equipped with cameras and sensors, you are surrounded by 3-D images, sounds and other sensory information, which creates a super-realistic effect called “presence”. (Lines 5-8 P53) Answers

1. The main body of the sentence is “…you are surrounded…”. The conjunction “When” guides time adverbial clause. The part “equipped with cameras and sensors” modifies “headset”. The conjunction “which” guides attributive clause, modifying the main idea of the former part of the sentence.
2. What if I told you that doctors could create a virtual “twin” in order to practise a delicate surgery before attempting it on the patient? (Lines 25-27 P53)
2. The main body of this sentence is an ellipsis. Its full sentence is “What would you feel if I told…”. This sentence uses a subjunctive mood contrary to the present fact. The conjunction “if” guides virtual conditional sentence, in which the secondary main body is “I told you…”. The conjunction “that” guide an object clause,in which the secondary main body is “doctors could create a…twin”, with the part “in order to practise a delicate surgery” as adverbial of purpose and the part “before attempting it on the patient” as adverbial of time modifying verb “practise”. 3. They’re well equipped to become part of a technological generation that will develop and use VR to do things we might think of as impossible today. (Line 59-61 P54)
3. They main body of the sentence is “They’re well equipped”. The word “equipped” is an adjective transformed from a past participle. The part “to become part of a technological generation” is adverbial. The conjunction “that” guides attributive clause.
