One day soon you may have a tool to help you quickly learn and remember names and faces, according to a new study published Wednesday in the journal NPJ: Science of Learning. Researchers from Northwestern University found playing a recording of people’s names during a night’s deepest sleep period strengthened people’s memories and improved their ability to recall names and faces the next morning,
Paller and his team asked a small group of 24 people to try to memorize pictures of 80 faces and corresponding names. During their naps, the researchers carefully monitored brain activity. When brain waves showed that the person was in slow-wave or deep sleep, some of the names they had studied were played quietly on a speaker.
“When our participants woke up, they were relatively better at recognizing people’s faces and remembering their names—compared to memory for faces and names not reactivated during sleep,” Paller said.
However, if the brain waves showed the persons’ sleep had been disturbed during their nap, there was no improved recall on the test. “It’s a new and exciting finding about sleep, because it tells us that the way information is reactivated during sleep to improve memory storage is linked with high-quality sleep,” said lead author Nathan Whitmore, a doctoral candidate in the Interdepartmental Neuroscience Program at Northwestern, in a statement. 24.In which situation does a person feel concerned? A.Having a company video call. B.Mistaking someone for someone else. C.Returning to work in person.

(2022·云南省昭通市一中2022届高三开学考试英语试题)What were you doing when you were nine years old? Making crafts from a Klutz book? Kicking around a soccer ball? Designing a business plan to deal with plastic pollution and relieve childhood poverty? Zymal Umar showed us the latter. The Pakistan’s youngest businesswoman has started a project entitled Zee Bags, which aims to reduce plastic pollution by providing an environmentally-friendly alternative to plastic grocery bags.
When Zymal was on a shopping trip with her parents three years ago, she was shocked by the number of plastic bags on the streets. Depressed by the plastic pollution, she was reminded of the severe consequences our habits have on the environment. Then, she noticed a shopkeeper handing out newspaper bags. And at that moment, Zymal knew she had to act. Since then she has created beautiful, unique reusable newspaper bags for hundreds of customers.
It’s amazing to see this youngster using her brains and business skills for good. And she should certainly feel proud of the work she is doing. After all, plastic grocery bags are killing thousands of marine animals every year through their contribution to plastic waste. According to The Earth Institute, over one trillion plastic bags are used worldwide annually—that’s about two million bags used per minute around the world.
And those bags certainly don’t disappear into thin air. Instead, they end up in our oceans, putting approximately 700 marine species in danger of extinction due to the threat from pollution. And plastic bags are just one of the many forms of plastic trash that ends up in the oceans—in fact, an astonishing 8. 8 million tons of this material make their way from land to the oceans every single year.
But with Zee Bags, we’re all empowered to make more thoughtful choices about our trash production. And Zymal’s amazingness doesn’t stop there—the profits from her sales go towards helping poor children.
28.What is the second paragraph mainly about? A.How Zymal felt about her shopping trip. B.How Zymal learned about plastic pollution. C.How Zymal was received by the shopkeeper. D.How Zymal was inspired to create her bags.
29.Why are figures mentioned in the third and fourth paragraphs? A.To praise Zymal for her great efforts. B.To urge readers to stop using plastics. C.To stress the seriousness of plastic pollution.

(2022·山东省潍坊市2022届高三下学期一模英语试题)For humans, adapting to climate change will mostly be a matter of technology. More air conditioning, better-designed houses and bigger flood defenses may help lessen the effects of a warmer world. Animals will have to rely on changing their bodies or their behaviour. In a paper published in Trends in Ecology & Evolution, a team led by Sara Ryding, a professor in Australia, shows that is already happening. In some species of Australian parrot, for instance beak(喙) size has increased by between 4% and 10%since 1871. Similar trends are seen in species of mice and bats growing bigger ears, tails, legs and wings.
All that fits nicely with evolutionary(进化的) theory. “Allen’s rule”, named after Joe Allen, who suggested it in 1877, holds that warm-blooded animals in hot places tend to have larger appendages(附加物) than those in mild areas. Such adaptations boost an animal’s surface area relative to its body volume, helping it to get rid of additional heal. Fennec foxes, meanwhile, which are native to the Sahara desert, have strikingly large ears, especially compared with their Arctic cousins.
Ryding’s team combined data from different species in different places. Now that they have little in common apart from living on a warming planet, climate change is the most reasonable explanation. Since any evolutionary adaptation comes with trade-offs, it is unclear how far the process might go. Bigger beaks might interfere with feeding, for instance. Larger wings are heavier, and bigger legs cost more energy to grow.
Honestly, studying a broader range of animals will help firm up exactly what is happening. For now, at least, the increase is small, never much more than 10%. That may change as warming accelerates. Every little bit of avoided future temperature increases results in less warming that would otherwise slay for essentially forever.
32. Why do some species grow bigger parts of their body? A. They are following the new trends. B. They have to adapt to warmer climate. C. Scientists need them to do experiments. D. Larger parts tend to help them feed well.
33. Where may warm-blooded animals have bigger body parts? A. In mild areas. C. In the Arctic.
B. In hot places. D. In deserted regions.
优点英语
34. What do we know about the change in animals from the last two paragraphs? A. It comes at a cost. B. Its cause is definite.
C. It happens in the same habitat. D. Its process will end soon.
35. What can be a suitable tile for the text? A. Living on a Warming Planet B. Measures to Remove Heat C. Pioneering Research on Animals D. Evolution to Survive Heat
【答案】32. B 33. B 34. A 35. D

推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Since any evolutionary adaptation comes with trade-offs, it is unclear how far the process might go. Bigger beaks might interfere with feeding, for instance. Larger wings are heavier, and bigger legs cost more energy to grow.”(由于任何进化适应都会带来权衡,因此尚不清楚这一过程会走多远。例如,较大的喙可能会妨碍进食。更大的翅膀更重,更大的腿需要更多的能量才能成长。)可知,动物的变化是有代价的。故选A项。 【35题详解】

(2022·山东省日照市2022届高三上学期期末校际联考英语试题)As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to change our world, it will have good and bad influences on our society. 36 But some changes could be challenging. Here are some of the challenges that might be faced by us in the future. And we should be thinking about how to deal with them now.
37 Some people are concerned about the loss of jobs caused by use of machines. But the real challenge for humans is to find their love for new jobs and develop the ability to take these new jobs. According to PwC, a global company, millions of present jobs will be replaced by AI in the UK for decades to come. 38 When people face new jobs, making a living can be challenging for some of them.
Another challenge is about the safety of our data, like our age, our address and our interests. 39 As more and more personal data is called every day by some people and companies, the government should make laws to protect the safety of each person’s data.
One more challenge is whether machines will become super-intelligent and be out of humans’ control at last. If that happens, it may risk our society’s safety, instead of doing good to it. 40 Researcher Elon says, “To deal with this challenge, all countries should work together so that we don’t end up doing something wrong with the technology.”
Thus, in the long run, we have to watch these challenges AI brings to our society. A. AI is often closely connected to data. B. AI will surely cause our job market to change. C. But more new jobs will be created for humans. D. AI will make people reconsider their choice of jobs. E. People take different attitudes towards the use of AI.
F. This unwanted result of AI’s development will likely challenge us all. G. Some people believe that the changes that AI brings will mostly be good. 【答案】36. G 37. B 38. C 39. A 40. F
