It's quite impressive to see Canada geese flying into the clouds. They live to be around 25 years old and are very loyal. They never forget their first home. No one knows this more than my family.

In 2000, when I was seven, my parents and I came back from a T-ball game one late spring afternoon. To our surprise, two adult geese and a baby goose were in our driveway (车库前的私 人车道).The adults were shocked by us and flew away, but their baby was too young to fly and couldn't follow. We are no strangers to the ways of wildlife, so we knew to avoid contact with the baby, hoping he could join his parents.

Hours passed, and night fell. The tiny little thing was wandering around our yard, unaware of what could happen. It was clear that the baby needed protection, warmth, and food to make it to the morning, so we brought him onto our back porch (门廊)and set up a wire fence to enclose and protect him.

We all pretty much slept with one eye open till morning. And then another morning. And another. Each day, we tried eagerly to get the baby back to his

parents, who kept coming to our yard. He wouldn't go to them, though, and they wouldn't come close enough to claim him. The baby goose had clearly decided we were his new family and we gave him a name - Peeper, because he would follow us around the yard making a peeping (唧唧叫)noise, nonstop.

Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months, until almost a year passed. Peeper slept on our back porch in typical goose fashion. Every day, my dad would clear his droppings with water and throw him up into the air, so he could fly a loop around the house, coming back again once the porch was clean.

Paragraph 1:

One evening, my uncle was over, and my dad wanted to show him Peeper's loop.

Joel stared at the ground. Rather, he stared at what was lying on the ground:a robotic glove. It was made of metal, with black and yellow paint. Joel looked around his backyard. How did a robotic glove end up next to his dad’s vegetable garden?

In any case, Joel had found it. And no one else was around.

That meant only one thing: finders keepers. Wasn’t that how finders keepers

worked? If you found something and couldn’t find the owner, it was yours.

The robotic glove was now Joel’s. Picking up the glove. Joel realized it wasn’t as heavy as he expected it would be. Even though it was much bigger than his own hand, he decided to try it on.

He slipped his hand inside and felt the machine come to life. It beeped(发哔哔声)three times. Joel moved his fingers, and the robot fingers moved too. Joel walked over to a large tree branch that had fallen in his yard and wrapped the robotic fingers around it. He lifted the branch. It should have been heavy, but with the glove it was no heavier than a small branch.

He couldn’t believe it. Maybe it was a kind of antigravity machine reported in the newspaper.

Now, what was he going to do with it?

Joel’s mom was inside rearranging the furniture. He could walk in and say “Do you need a hand with that?” before easily picking up the couch and setting it somewhere else.

At the library, he could say “Let me help” and carry in a tall stack of boxes filled with books. At the park, he could say “How about we eat lunch over there?” and carry the picnic table to a shady spot.

Everything would feel as light as a pencil. He’d feel like a superhero.

But first, he wanted to show his dad what he’d found. He started running toward the front yard. That’s when he heard someone call, “Has anyone seen my robotic glove?” Joel stopped short.

Near the garage, his dad was talking to their new next-door neighbor, Mr. Shore.

“I haven’t seen a robotic glove,” Joel’s dad said.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Julia Koch began what was only her second year as a firstgrade teacher in a virtual classroom at Edgewood Elementary School. One September afternoon a few weeks into the school year, she received a call from Cynthia Phillips, who was having technical difficulties with her granddaughter’s tools for online learning.

Koch immediately noticed something was wrong with Phillips. They had spoken many times before, but Koch had never heard Phillips sound quite like this. Her words were so jumbled(混乱)that Koch could barely understand her, though she was able to make out that Phillips had fallen four times that day. Koch called her principal, Charlie, who assured her that he would call and check on Phillips himself.

Just like Koch, Charlie could barely understand Phillips. He suspected she might be having a stroke-he recognized the signs from when his own father had suffered one. Meanwhile, Charlie immediately became concerned that Phillips’s two grand children, ages six and eight, were probably home alone with her. Charlie

asked his office manager to send an ambulance to the grandmother’s home. Then he called Mathews and Keytria, two deans in the school district, to tell them what was going on. Both of them dropped everything and drove to the family’s home.

When they pulled up less than ten minutes later, the doctors were treating Phillips while the two girls, looking visibly shaken, were outside with a neighbor. The quick response from Koch and Charlie saved Phillips’s life. She arrived at the hospital in time to get treatment and before chronic damage occurred.

The sky was clear blue and the sun cast diamonds down on fields, forests and villages. A flock(群)of wild ducks were flying in formation heading south for the coming winter. They formed a beautiful V in the sky and were admired by everyone who saw them from below.

It was a fine September afternoon that Wally, one of the wild ducks in the formation spotted something on the ground. It was a yard with a flock of tame(驯服的)ducks who lived on the farm. They were wandering around on the ground, quacking merrily and eating corn that was thrown on the ground for them every day. Wally was satisfied with what he saw. How comfortably they live! “It sure would be nice to have some of that corn,\" he thought to himself. And all this flying is very tiring. \"I'd like to just wander around for a while like these tame ducks.\"

So, after thinking it over a while, Wally left the formation of wild ducks, made a sharp dive and headed for the barnyard directly. He landed safely among the tame ducks, and began to waddle around and quack quickly. He also started eating corn

in cheerful spirits.

At the same time, the formation of wild ducks continued their journey south, but Wally, who was content with the delicious corn, didn't care. “I'll rejoin them when they come back north in a few months,\" he said to himself.

Several months went by and one day, Wally looked up and spotted the flock of wild ducks flying in formation, heading north. They still looked beautiful up there, attracting everyone's attention without doubt. And Wally was tired of the yard. It was muddy and everywhere he wandered there was nothing but duck waste. \"It's time to leave.\" said Wally, staring at the wild ducks in the air.

The football season was almost over. Sally had been playing football all summer. She really enjoyed running around with the other players in her bright orange uniform, chasing the black and white ball across the grassy field. As much as shewed, though, Sally still had not scored one single goal.

Before each game, they had a practice session. The coach showed Sally and her team how to pass the ball to each other and take shots at the goal. Sally was pretty good at passing the ball, but even during practices, she couldn't kick the ball

past the goalkeeper. She wondered if she should quit football and join a different club.

“Don’t give up,” said the coach. But it was half-time, and Sally was feeling frustrated (沮丧). She was trying! Every time she got a chance to kick the ball, it would go in the wrong direction or a player from the other team would take control of it. She sipped at her cola and pouted (撅嘴).

The break was over and the referee blew his whistle to start the game again. The two teams walked back onto the field, both determined to win. Sally bent, tied up her shoelace and heard her mother whisper in her ear. “Stay focused. Keep your eyes on the ball. Look for an opportunity to get the ball. You can do it.”

Sally stood up and took a deep breath. Even if she didn't get one goal all summer, she knew that she had tried her best. That was something to be proud of. So she smiled at her mother and headed to her position. The whistle blew, and the game continued.

The score was tied with one goal each. The green team was pretty good, but Sally's orange team was fast. The girls' ponytails bounced as they ran, with many feet kicking frantically (拼命地) at the ball when it came near them. It was a rather boring game and Sally's heart was no longer in it.

参考答案

一、

Paragraph 1:

One evening, my uncle was over, and my dad wanted to show him Peeper's loop. But this time, Peeper just flew off. Everyone was very, very sad. It was dark,

and we were worried. We looked for him for days calling his name, but he didn’t come back. We hoped he went off on his natural way. Again, days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months, then years. I missed Peeper. I would call for him every time I saw a group of geese flying by in V-formation. Twenty years passed, and Peeper became a happy memory for family.

Paragraph 2:

It came as a shock 20 years later when an aging adult goose made his way back to my yard. At first, I thought it was just another goose. And yet, something about him seemed strangely familiar to me. The goose came back repeatedly. He did all of the same things Peeper used to, like trying to come in through the front door and sleeping in our back porch. Besides this goose responded to the name Peeper. Much to my surprise my old friend returned, 20 years later.

Joel’s eyes widened when he realized the glove belonged to Mr. Shore. Staring at it, he felt caught in a dilemma, though he knew finders keepers didn’t work if you found the owner. However, seeing the disappointment on Mr. Shore’s face, he took a deep breath and called out, “I found it!” Mr. Shore’s face lit up with relief. Joel ran over, took off the glove, and gave it to his neighbor. “I found it in the backyard,” Joel said. “I tried it on and I could lift a huge branch. It’s amazing.”

Just then, Joel’s mom called out, “Help me move the couch!” He hesitated because without the glove, his dreams of being a superhero faded away. He felt so upset. Everyone looked at each other—and then everyone looked at the glove. Mr. Shore held it out to Joel with a giant smile. “Would you like to use it?” “Yes, please.” Joel’s smile was as big as Mr. Shore’s. He slipped on the glove and the couch was as light as a pencil. Joel felt like a superhero again! (77 words)

Dimitri immediately ran to Aleko’s house. He entered the house, calling out angrily, “Aleko, Why did you steal my wife’s lamb?” He kept accusing Aleko of stealing the lamb and threatened to call the police if he refused to return it. Aleko was calm and denied taking it. He stopped Dimitri and led him into his backyard. It was true that he had just bought a lamb, but his lamb was black. Yes, it was a black lamb rather than a white one. Dimitri realized he had made a mistake.

Dimitri really felt ashamed of having acted so blindly. He approached Aleko and begged him to forgive his rude behavior. They were talking when it began to rain. Aleko asked Dimitri to stay until the rain stopped. They continued to talk as if nothing had happened. When he went outside half an hour later, Dimitri opened his eyes wide in astonishment. The little black lamb was almost white. Its wool which had been dyed black had been washed clean by the rain. Things came to light at God’s willpower, after all.

Koch and Charlie rush to the hospital to see Phillips. Phillips had recovered and was conscious. Her two young granddaughters were beside her, peeling apples for her. They looked at their grandmother wistfully, afraid that she might be in danger again. Phillips looked up, saw Koch and Charlie, and smiled gratefully. She had already heard that they had saved her. “Good teachers, here you are,” Phillips smiled. “They say you've saved my life. Thank you so much. You are angels.”

Koch and Charlie were excited and proud of Phillips’ words. They are like children who have been praised. Koch walked over, hugged Phillips, and said, “Lady, this is what we should do. In my only two years as a teacher, it was the most meaningful thing I had ever done. We are so happy to see you recover.” Charlie also went over, touched the heads of the two little girls, and said, “Grandma is still weak. You need to take good care of her. If you have any difficulties, contact the teacher in time.” After a conversation for a while, they left with relief.

五、

Paragraph 1:

I had no other option but to keep my mouth shut. I was scared. I didn’t know what to do. I forgot all I had learned from the training about measures to deal with an emergency. But to my surprise, the man finally stopped the car in front of the bank building, after taking another shorter route. I didn’t expect that I would be

able to reach the bank safely and punctually. I asked the man who he was.

Paragraph 2:

He told me that he was my boss. All that had happened was just a test. Unfortunately, I didn’t pass it. He said that if I was intelligent enough to be selected and employed by an international bank, I should not have taken such a risk and trusted a stranger offering a ride. Although I had prepared for everything, I still lost the precious chance to work. From this experience, I realized that the thing that matters most is whether you can apply what you have learned to your job. Moreover, success is not only in the interview, but also in the details of life.

六、

So Wally moved his wings with all his strength and tried to fly. But he had

gained some weight from all his corn-eating, and he hadn’t exercised his wings much either. He finally got off the ground, but he was flying too low and slammed into the side of the barn. He fell to the ground with a thud and said to himself, “Oh, well, I’ll just wait until they fly south in a few months. Then I’ll rejoin them and become a wild duck again.”

When the flock of wild ducks flew overhead once more, Wally tried again to join them. But he simply didn’t have the strength. Every winter and every spring,

he saw his wild duck friends flying overhead, and they would call out to him. But his attempts to leave were all in vain. Eventually Wally no longer paid any attention

to the wild ducks flying overhead. He hardly even noticed them. He had, after all, become a barnyard duck.

七、

Sally started daydreaming about joining other school clubs. She could be a member of the hip hop club, which her best friend Tracy kept talking about. She imagined herself dancing on stage of a big auditorium with thousands of people cheering for her. She could also try a different sport, like jogging or cycling. Anyway, football would be her last choice. Just as her mind was wandering, she saw a familiar face in the crowd. It was her mother. “Stay focused. You can do it.”

Recalling her mother’s words, Sally was woken from her daydream. At that very moment, her teammate passed the ball to her. She took control of it and dribbled it between her feet, moving forward toward the net of the green team. She passed a few players and was soon positioned right in front of the net. Focused on the ball, she kicked it as hard as she could. The referee blew her whistle. “Goal!”. Sally’s team won. Her mom was right. All she had to do was stay focused.
