Huang Bo: A plain actor with overrated skills
Surrounded by flowers, cameras and entertainment reporters, mainland-famous actor Huang Bo has made his name well known in Hong Kong and Taiwan. He won the best leading actor prize, the Taiwan Golden Horse Award, in 2009 for his role as a farmer in the movie Cow. In fact, it took only three years to catapult him to stardom. How did a short, plain-looking guy who played a clown-like role in low-budget films win such a prestigious award? Is it because the judges of film festivals have aesthetic fatigue, so they chose an “ugly” man instead of a handsome guy to win the “golden horse”?
It’s understandable, since judges and cinemagoers have begun to tire of “big”
movies and stars. It has been almost 10 years since the first big-budget film Hero was produced in 2003. Now audiences can see blockbusters every year that attract audiences with their A-list stars and splendid scenes.
When people wanted to see new faces, they discovered Huang Bo in 2006.
That’s the year he played a stupid criminal in China’s so-called “first” black comedy film. At that time, the 32-year-old was not a known name in the movie industry.
He always played little figures at the bottom of the society in films like Crazy
Stone in 2006 and Cow in 2009. The roles in these movies were those of dirty-faced stupid men speaking in dialect to attract a laugh. His films were not meant to provoke audiences to engage in deep thinking, but simply to jeer at the characters’
bad luck. Audiences could tell themselves, ‘Oh, I’m luckier than this poor guy.’ But when they walked out of the theater, did they also ask themselves, ‘What did I just watch? Am I as stupid as the character Huang played for laughing at the simple story and his performance?’
It doesn’t mean that films about minor figures must be foolish or full of bad luck.
The Oscar-winning movie Forrest Gump is a great one, for it makes audience think deeply about humanity. It is a tonic for the weary of spirit. For those who feel that being set adrift in a season of action movies is like wandering into a desert, movies like this are an oasis. Can Huang and his movies provoke audience like this? Definitely no.
Comedic actor Charlie Chaplin won the hearts of audiences with his great sense
of humor and slapstick comedy skills. He created many grand and inspired moments in movies. His films are real black comedies, versus Huang’s movies that are only about crimes and dark sides.
Huang, don’t believe audiences are foolish enough to continue to accept your
farces and acting skills. You always repeat yourself in movies. Your fortune will not last long if you continue to perform the same roles, and your plain appearance will not be an advantage forever. People will begin appreciating handsome actors in leading roles again.
If the Chinese film industry needs this kind of “black comedy” to win audiences,
then it is the tragedy of our industry and Chinese movie audiences. To watch comedies or to make tragedies? It’s time to decide.

Xi urges political advisors to offer more advice on state affairs
BEIJING, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- President Xi Jinping on Friday called on political advisors to conscientiously perform their duties in 2017 and give more advice and suggestions on state affairs.
Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), made the remarks while addressing a New Year gathering held by the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).
Xi urged political advisory bodies to perform their functions of political consultation, democratic supervision, and participation in the deliberation and administration of state affairs.
The president hailed the CPPCC's contributions to the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020) this year, the first year of the national economic and social development blueprint for the years up to 2020.
Xi stressed the importance of developing a patriotic united front and system of multi-party cooperation and political consultation under the leadership of the CPC in 2017 in order to gather consensus and \"positive energy\" for the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
The CPPCC should make efforts to deepen problem-oriented investigation and research, and carry out effective consultation and discussion of state affairs, so as to come out with forthright advice, good suggestions and concrete measures, he said. Xi vowed to support the efforts of Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions in 2017 to develop their economies and improve people's livelihoods.
\"We must ensure the practice of 'one country, two systems' is firmly upheld without losing shape or becoming distorted,\" Xi added.
He also pledged adherence to the 1992 Consensus as the common political
foundation, as well as relentless efforts to boost the peaceful development of relations across the Taiwan Strait, and to achieve the complete reunification of the motherland.
\"We will hold high the banners of peace, development, cooperation and mutual gain to build a human community of shared future,\" Xi said.
In his speech, Xi highlighted the 19th CPC National Congress to be held in 2017, calling it a major event in the political life of the Party, the state and people of all ethnic groups.
He also stressed 2017 as an important year for implementing the countries’ economic and social development blueprint for the 13th Five-Year Plan period, and deepening supply-side structural reform.
Looking back, Xi said, 2016 was a crucial year in the journey of the Chinese nation to great rejuvenation.
The CPC Central Committee, rallying and leading people of all ethnic groups across China, embarked on the \"great march\" in the decisive stage of building a moderately prosperous society, launched the uphill battle of supply-side structural reform, and \"sounded the bugle to call the charge\" on poverty, Xi said.
China has scored a good beginning for the 13th Five-Year Plan, the president added.
China has continued to build a moderately prosperous society in 2016, with its economic growth still ranking atop the world, and an additional 10 million people lifted out of poverty, Xi said.
The country has carried on deepening reform in all aspects, with 97 key reform tasks completed, 419 reform plans put forward by various sectors, and frameworks for reform in major sectors established, he added.
Moreover, efforts have been made to carry on with comprehensively advancing the rule of law and governing the Party strictly, Xi said, adding major breakthroughs have been scored in national defense and military reform.
\"We have implemented the 'one country, two systems' principle comprehensively, maintained prosperity and stability in Hong Kong and Macao,
adhered to the common political foundation of the 1992 Consensus, and strived to safeguard peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait,\" Xi said.
\"We have deepened foreign relations in all dimensions, accelerated the Belt and Road Initiative, successfully hosted the G20 Hangzhou Summit, and handed out a Chinese proposal for building a better world,\" Xi added.
On behalf of the CPC Central Committee, State Council and CMC, Xi extended New Year greetings to non-Communist parties, the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, non-CPC personnel, people's organizations, as well as people from all walks of life, including workers, farmers, intellectuals, cadres, soldiers and police officers.
His greetings were also extended to compatriots in Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas Chinese, as well as international friends.
The gathering was also attended by Premier Li Keqiang, top legislator Zhang Dejiang, top political advisor Yu Zhengsheng as well as Liu Yunshan, Wang Qishan and Zhang Gaoli, along with non-CPC members, leading officials of central departments, members of different ethnic groups and people from all walks of life. Yu Zhengsheng presided over the gathering.

Women chase secrets for lighter skin
By Xu Junqian (China Daily) 18:57, July 23, 2013
One of the most popular coinages on Sina Weibo( Micro Blog ) the Chinese version of twitter, may be \"baifumei\which, literally translated, means white, rich, and beautiful — used mostly to describe the kind of girl most men want and most women want to be.
For males, the comparable expression is \"gaofushuai\meaning tall, rich and handsome.
Just as tall men are universally considered more attractive, here in China there is an all-out obsession with lighter-colored skin among women. That breeds a strict, essential, daily anti-UV skincare procedure in the summer, if not year-round, for urban ladies.
The procedure, varying from five minutes to hours long depending on individuals, usually starts in the morning, right after the three basic steps of skin care (cleansing, toning and moisturizing).
Twenty to 30 minutes before going out, a coin-size amount of sunscreen (3 millimeters) rated at SPF50, is put on the face. For bodies, a thicker and usually cheaper type of sunscreen is chosen and sprayed all over the exposed skin, including those easy-to-neglect areas like the backs of the neck and ears.
Foundations and powders that also contain anti-UV agents are put on after the sunscreen to 100-percent guarantee blocking the \"evil\" sunshine and also correct skin tone. During the rest of the day, there will be a couple of freshen-ups, as it is believed that the screen will gradually lose its effects and sweating can wash it away.
An umbrella, ideally the large, black kind, is a must-carry when outdoors, while more cautious people seek physical protection from long sleeves, hats and all forms of self-made face covers that are more effective than the sunscreen.
Foodwise, drinking a glass of tomato juice before going out is believed to be organic protectionagainst sunshine. Drinks containing lemons and oranges are often chosen for their vitamin C content that can brighten skin tone, while vegetables that make the skin sensitive to UV rays (such as carrots and celery) are shunned.
Sound tiring? The reality is even more so, but according to one saying that many women follow, there are no ugly women but only lazy ones.

WASHINGTON, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Americans were expected to spend 16.8 billion U.S. dollars for Easter, a widely celebrated religious festival in the United States, according to a survey released on Tuesday by the world's leading retail trade association.
American consumers would shell out an average of 145.28 dollars on everything
from apparel and candy to food and decorations this year, up 11 percent from 131.04 dollars last year, said the survey commission by National Retail Federation (NRF), who represents retailers from the United States and more than 45 countries abroad.
\"Though the price of gas is on everyone's mind, Easter is one of the few holidays some consumers are willing to stretch their budgets, especially because many children look forward to treats and new outfits on Easter morning,\" said NRF president and CEO Matthew Shay.
According to the survey conducted by BIGinsight, those celebrating Easter had a hefty appetite for candy and new spring clothes. Nearly half (48.5 percent) would head to the stores to take advantage of retailers' spring sales on colorful fashions and accessories, with total spending on those items expected to reach 3 billion dollars. Most (89.3 percent) would run straight to the candy aisle, shelling out more than 2 billion dollars on traditional favorites such as chocolate eggs and jelly beans. The average person will spend 26.11 dollars on apparel, up from 21.51 last year and 20.35 dollars on candy, up from 18.55 last year.
Americans were also set to fork over more on their Easter meals with the average person expected to spend 44.34 dollars, up from 40.05 dollars last year for a total of 5.1 billion dollars. Additionally, consumers would spend an average of 20.57 dollars on gifts for their friends and family, 10.50 dollars on flowers and 9. 07 dollars on decorations for their home and office. Half (53.6 percent) will buy greeting cards, spending an average of 7.04 dollars.
\"Beautiful weather conditions coupled with a slight lift in consumer confidence will likely be a boon to the Easter holiday this year as consumers begin to seek out new spring merchandise for their home or garden, and even their wardrobe,\" said BIGinsight Consumer Insights Director Pam Goodfellow.
Retailers operate more than 3.6 million U.S. establishments. Contributing 2.5 trillion dollars to annual GDP, retail is a daily barometer for the U.S. economy. Easter is the first Sunday after the full moon following the northern hemisphere's vernal equinox, and falls on April 8 this year. The consumer poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 1 percent.

China targets economic growth of 6.5-7 pct in 2016
(XINHUA)
BEIJING, March 5 -- China targets economic growth rate of 6.5 to 7 percent in 2016, and an average annual growth rate of at least 6.5 percent through 2020, according to a government work report available to media Saturday morning before the opening of the annual parliamentary session.
Last year's target was around 7 percent, and China registered an actual 6.9 percent growth, the slowest expansion in a quarter of a century.
This year's target is aligned with China's goal of finishing building a moderately prosperous society in all respects, and takes into consideration the need to advance structural reform, the report said.
\"It will also help guide market expectations and keep them stable. The aim of maintaining stable growth is primarily to ensure employment and promote the people's wellbeing, and a growth rate of between 6.5 percent and 7 percent will allow for relatively full employment,\" according to the report.
The country's urban job creation target remains at least 10 million. Last year's 6.9-percent growth added 13.12 million new urban jobs.
\"...China's economic output had exceeded 60 trillion yuan. Every percentage point of
GDP growth today is equivalent to 1.5 percentage points of growth five years ago or 2.5 percentage points of growth ten years ago. The larger the economy grows, the greater the difficulty of achieving growth,\" the report said.
A brief outlook for China's 13th Five-Year Plan was also included in the report. The country expects an average annual growth rate of at least 6.5 percent from 2016 through 2020, when China will have a gross domestic product of 90 trillion yuan (13.8 trillion U.S. dollars).

China's real estate destocking has a long way to go: experts
BEIJING, June 20 -- China has a long way to go in destocking its real estate inventories given the huge overhang of unsold homes, property experts have said.
\"The destocking efforts should pay more attention to sales instead of prices,\" David D. Li, Center for China in the World Economy director, was quoted Monday by People's Daily.
By the end of May, 721.69 million square meters of property was still unsold, although this is 5.21 million square meters lower than a month earlier, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed.
\"The battle to destock is far from finished, given the growing divergence in the property market, with better economically positioned areas reporting price rises, and less developed regions showing muted response,\" according to Li.
In recent months, the property sector has shown signs of improvement, with home prices rising in big cities including Beijing, Shenzhen and Shanghai. But markets in smaller cities remain subdued due to a supply glut.
The contrasting picture has prompted local authorities to take different approaches: Shenzhen and Shanghai have tightened policies to curb speculative purchases and contain risks for a bubble, while third- and fourth-tiered cities are exploring new
ways to encourage sales.
For instance, in central Shanxi Province, migrant workers are entitled to government subsidies and tax deductions on mortgage interest.
In western Qinghai Province, property developers have been told they can change land use from property to other industries including tourism and sports.
Yang Song, an economist with Beijing Academy of Social Sciences, said that for third- and fourth-tier cities, authorities should integrate the destocking process with the country's urbanization drive and expedite the construction of low-income housing, among others.
