If you take a close look, you can see two grasshoppers on the leaves, a large one and a small one, which were the symbol of many children in a family.

So my daughter and I had to stay in a hotel. It cost me 12 pounds.”
Harry was worried. He remembered selling the woman a return ticket. “Come into the office, Madam,’ he said politely. “I’ll just check the Jersey timetable for May 22nd.”
The woman and her little girl followed him inside. She was quite right, as Harry soon discovered. There was no sailing on May 22nd. How could he have made such a careless mistake? He shouldn’t have sold her a ticket for that day. Wondering what to do, he smiled at the child. “You look sun burnt,” he said to her. “Did you have a nice holiday in Jersey?”

the names for some of the products you buy every day and you’ll agree that the name and the product are connected in everyone’s mind.
In many countries, successful trade or brand names are protected by law so that other
companies cannot make the same product by copying. Businesses register a company or a product name with the government. In fact, more than 1,000 product and company names are registered every hour. Many companies spend a lot of money to find the right name for their products. A good example of this is in the car industry. Some successful names for cars have powerful associations. The Ford Mustang and the Jaguar are only two examples of choosing the names of animals that are fast and strong.
When a U. S company decides to sell its product in another country, it has to make
sure that the product name translates properly. When Coca-Cola introduced its soft drink to China, it looked for the right name. It wanted a name that would do two things. One was to present its image in Chinese and the second was to be close to its first brand name—Coke. It took some efforts before finding the right word — which sounds similar and translates as “happiness in the mouth”. Asian company names are not new to the United States. The brand names of Samsung and Sony have been successful. Finding the right brand name is a big business. Asian companies that sell to foreign markets pay to find a name that will connect with its customers. There are even naming companies that offer help in inventing product names. These companies can charge up to $100,000 a word for their good names. But it’s worth it. Successful companies know how important the right brand names are for their development.
8. Why are trade names protected by law in many countries?
A. To make companies pay for naming service. B. To help people choose the best products.
C. To present good images of the products. D. To prevent good images from being copied.
9. Which of the following does the writer agree?
A. It’s worthwhile that a company pays a large sum of money for a name of a product. B. Asian company names are strange to Americans. C. It’s illegal to set up naming companies.

A. Many companies care about the cost of finding the right names. B. Creative trade names can help companies to have a larger sale. C. The government often does business with naming companies. D. It is considered necessary for cars to be named after animals. 11. What’s the best title for the passage? A. The Importance of Right Brand Names C. The Rules of Naming

16 However, nobody asked if there was a common number that thousands of people
B. they know how to calculate
loved enough, to call it their favorite. But now, thanks to London-based author Alex Bellos, it appears that such a number does exist and it is number seven!
Bellos who has written a lot of books about mathematics and spent a large amount
of time talking about the subject at schools, universities, and festivals, is always asked about his favorite number. 17 But he soon realized that it was because many
people felt an emotional attachment to numbers.
Curious to see if that was indeed the case, Bellos decided to set up an online survey
and ask the people all over the world to pick their favorite number. 18 Here is what he found out Though almost every number was selected, it was seven that appeared to be the most popular — 4,000 or 10% of the people that took the survey, picked it as their favorite number.
19 There is the cultural meaning as evidenced by the seven ancient wonders
of the world, seven days in a week, and last but not least seven circles of the universe.
If that is not convincing enough, Alex also points out the importance of the number
in another aspect. Seven is the only number between one and ten that can’t be multiplied or divided by any other number within that group. For example, multiply one, two, three, four, and five by two and the answer can be found within the group. 20 Nine can be divided by three. Seven is the only number that stands untouchable! A. At first, the question annoyed him B. Six, eight and ten can be divided by two.
C. People like it because of some religious reasons.
D. Many people don’t like number thirteen and try to avoid it. E. To his surprise, about 44,000 people took the online survey. F. Some people think their lucky number can bring good luck to them.
G. Alex believes that seven is the choice for many people for a number of reasons.

第二节:书面表达(满分25分) One possible version Dear editor,
I’m Li Ming of Senior One, Mudanjiang No.1 Middle School. I'm writing to tell you about some symptoms of anxiety among us students before exams.
Most of us feel nervous whenever we’re taking an important exam. Some will feel dizzy or tired, some will suffer from lack of sleep, and some will lose their appetite. In fact, all these symptoms have terrible effects on our exams and we are all eager to get rid of them.
First of all, in my opinion, it’s important for us to have a positive attitude towards exams. They are only a means of checking how we are getting along with our studies, so there is no need to worry too much about the results. Study hard every day and make
careful plans for every exam. In this way we can avoid suffering from the pressure of exams.
Besides, enough sleep can make us energetic and enable us to perform well in an exam. Therefore, during the period of exams, we should not stay up too late. We can also try a warm bath or a cup of warm milk before going to bed. They might help us to have a sound sleep. We can keep ourselves relaxed and then concentrate ourselves on exams.
