The Lovely Bones is a supernatural drama film released in 2009.
The main character Susie Salmon of Pennsylvania narrates this story that begins in 1973, when she was a typical fourteen year old girl in a loving family to which no bad things ever happened. That year, Susie began to have the aspiration to become a wildlife photographer. She didn't noticed the creepiness of neighbor George Harvey, a serial killer of young females. And he murdered Susie in a cellar that he constructed under a corn field.
After Susie died, her mother, Abigail, is not dealing with her death well, keeping her bedroom as a sealed up memorial. Her father, Jack, along with their two other younger children, Lindsey and Buckley, feel like they can occasionally feel Susie's afterlife presence.
Indeed, Susie is currently in-between Heaven and Earth, looking over her family. There, Susie meets another girl, who tells Susie that she must advance forward to the next step. But Susie determines to try and lead those who can feel her presence to the fact that George Harvey is her murderer. Gradually, her father and sister Lindsey begin to wonder about this neighbor. While, the murderer perceives it and sets about his plan to murder Lindsey. One day Lindsey slipped into Harvey’s house and found his plan, but meanwhile, the murderer saw it and escaped at once. He eventually evaded the capture, but when he itched to murder again, he fell down accidentally from height and died.
Theme -- Good VS Evil
From the plots above, It’s clear that I chose good vs evil as the main theme of this movie is because there are very obvious conflicts between the good and the evil.
In the movie, there are lots of good people, Detective Fenerman, Susie’s father Jack, her sister Lindsey, and of course, Susie herself.
Susie was so innocent that was easily inveigled by Mr. Harvey, and then was raped and murdered by him. But after she entered the in-between world, seeing her family, especially her mother, drowning in sorrow, she didn’t follow her friend Holly’s advice to let it go, but decided to help, to guide her family to find the fact that their seemingly nice neighbor is her murderer.
Jack, Susie's dad, investigated Susie's disappearance and found the truth of his daughter's murder, but couldn't prove it. His struggle was obviously anguished. Meanwhile he had to face Susie's death, tried to keep his family and himself from going mad over what's happened to Susie.
And her sister Lindsey, from my point of view, is the most important good character among all. She is so brave, intelligent, and attentive. She knew that Jack is defeated in his attempts to prove Harvey's guilt, and she stepped in to do the job for him, also for Susie. But she's not only a brainiac, but also one of the most physically fit people, who is able to run eight miles in the rain. When she was in Harvey’s house and found that Harvey’s back, she decisively leaped out of the window from the 2nd floor, and ran home.
Here’s the only evil character in the movie, the murderer George Harvey. He killed altogether 7 females including Susie. Different from normal people, he was completely alone in the world, so he wanted to destroy the happy family he envied. Yet, even the taking of the oldest child didn't destroy the love of the Salmon family, they got through the toughest time and rebuild it eventually.
Conclusion
So from this movie we can see that we may not always fight evil with good successfully. But evil people will finally get what they deserve. Like Harvey, although he evaded the capture of police, he couldn’t escape the final punishment, unexpectedly fell down from height.
And since it’s also a crime film, I wanna tell you all, especially females should learn to protect yourselves, and learn to reject suspicious people whether they’re strangers or not.
