American Students lack of life skills
They seem to have the book smarts.
\"I am a finance and CPA accounting major \".
But maybe not enough to do real-life tasks , like calculate a 15% tip on a $20 meal. \"I guess it will be around $12 or $13?\" Sorry, wrong. Let's try it again. \"$3? \"
Well, most students we surveyed didn't in fact to get it right. A new study by American Institutes for Research found that more than half of 4-year-college students and nearly 75% of 2-year-college students lack the ability to figure out a tip, compare prices or even balance a checkbook.
\"There's been an assumption out there that college students are graduating with a certain level of, of what we would expect proficient skills. Um, in this study, it really shows that some of those assumptions may not be correct. \"
Graduates fared better when they came to filling out job applications and reading newspapers. But the problem researchers say is, the majority of them can't comprehend what they just read. Some students say they are not surprised by the results and add colleges need to do more to better prepare them.
\"It's irresponsible and negligent for colleges to be able to, to put their name /, their, their university on people's degrees and send these people to workforce when they're unprepared and unskilled. \"
\"They could have a class like how to do basic things. \"
A simple solution: life's little lessons to help educate America's future in and out of the classroom.

Most lucrative college degrees
Let's talk about the best paying jobs for college grades class of 2006. Some new numbers out here ,and Miles, you got it right, engineers, at the top of the list. The number is here, going up a little bit versus 2005. You can see chemical engineering, my father's a chemical engineer, $55,900, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, not too far behind, and then right on down the line, we have the economics sci-grads, accounting and economics. They've actually experienced the biggest growth - 5th and 6th parts there. Liberal arts though are seen a little bit of a down-tick from last year. Actually up 6.1%, but they are still at the low end of the list there. Overall though we are seeing a pay increases and starting salary offers and more job offers overall, so a much more encouraging story than we saw a couple of years ago, when kids were coming out of these really good schools, and lucky if they could get a job at Starbarks. Thing are really picking up from those years. Ok.
Here is the thing though they always yield to this right after you got out of school. They don't really track it down the road very well.
I,and I think that's a very interesting point(You know it's an important thing?),be...because engineers, typically top the list for starting salaries(right), and from what I've heard , from what I understand , you kinda stay at that level more than other(exactly),more than other(yeah).

What's the word that CEOs don't like the most?
(NBC)It's a four letter word that's not a curse word, but it may as well be for many employers conducting job interviews. WCUA-TV's Deanna Duarte reports .
The tie, the resume, the handshake, you've got the basics done, but that isn't all you need to know.
\"Interviews are like a huge part of getting a job now.\"
And it's the interview that can make or break your chances no matter what you want to do.
\"Do you like doctors, like... like a right hand, you know?\" \"More of like a tack, am I a tack in there?\"
\"It's like...you know, like a hotel, like in the, you go there...\" \"I hope it‟s a different feeling like, um...\"
Did you hear it? Maybe you're so used to it, you missed it.
Job interviewers say it's the four-letter-word that can keep you from getting that job. Listen again.
\"It's like...like...\" \"Like...\"
\"Like, you know, like...\" \"Like...\"
And chances are, your kids say it, a lot.
\"Umm...I'm a minister like...\" \"Like shirt malls.\" \"Like give it back...\" \"It's OK, like...\" \"GPA...marketing...\"
Luis Lamoure is the director of Career Services at LaSalle University. He says students may not know it, but that crouch word \"like\" can sink their shot at lending a job.
It's the repetitive and destructive use of it, um, if it happens every once in a while, but if every other word is \"like\um, you know, it, it does sound, um, make them sound a bit, maybe
immature.
\"I mean like...\" \"Like in the...\"
\"It‟s better for us like...\"
It's a catch-22, for some students, they know they've said it, but...
\"Yeah, I knew that...I‟ve noticed that.\"
\"You've noticed that , but you can't make it stop?\"
\"This isn't a job interview.\"
\"So it's ok, „cause it's just a TV interview.\"
\"Yeah, I know how to turn on, turn on my arm, so it switches.\"
\"It's something I've always done, so, I definitely need to work on that.\" \"You wanted to say...\"

Job-hopping
survey by the society for Human Resource Management shows that at any given time, one in three American workers are keeping their eyes peered for a new job opportunity. Whether it's inside their existing company or in another city or around the world, they are thinking about taking on a new professional challenge. For most people who voluntarily quit, a better pay is the main reason for jumping ship Other popular reasons for turning in a resignation letter are better opportunities at another company, feeling that there's no room for professional growth and being bored with the job. So, what should you consider when you are thinking about taking a new job? Experts say if you are dissatisfied with the culture at your current company, you should actively consider a change. Unhappy workers are less likely to contribute all they can. And that means, future growth and raises might be limited. Better compensation at another job should also be a big consideration. More money means financial security and that leads to higher job satisfaction.

Chinese Business Etiquette
Hello, Peter, very nice to meet you. Thank you for giving me this lesson in Chinese business etiquette. Not at all. Now I have to ask you, am I dressed for the part? Absolutely perfect for Chinese business meeting, conservative color, long skirt.
All right, good to hear. Well let's start the meeting then. Let's go, this way. This is my business card. Thank you. Notice how I present it to you with the English side facing you. Oh, OK , then I should do the same for you. Here is my business card. Oh, wonderful. Should I have ... you get yourself a Chinese name. Notice how I spend a little bit of time paying attention to detail of the card as a sign of respect.
A business meeting sometimes ends with a gift exchange. Here are some CNN branded gifts. Would these be appropriate to give in China? Er , some of them like the iPod might be too expensive, it could carry a bribery undertone. But the other side might feel uncomfortable, because we, he would have to reciprocate with something of equal value. Of this , this is a photo CD. Would this be a more appropriate choice? That is a perfect gift, that is , introduce your company, your city or your country. Ok, well, that wraps up the session here but our etiquette lesson will continue tonight over dinner? Ok, I'll see you then.
So Peter, tell me, how important is dinning to building a business relationship in China? It is a cultural way. Chinese people regard eating as one of the most important things in their lives as they say \"民以食为天\". What does that mean? That means eating is as important as the sky.
Now this is the dish that maybe some overseas businessmen or women might find a little bit unpalatable----it‟s sea slug. We also have a sautéed bullfrog . If, if you are a business person you are being offered these as a guest in China, and you don't want to eat it. What'd you do?
I would just say \"谢谢,这个我免了\". \"谢谢\" like this, and then no one's feelings are hurt , (no one's feelings...) everything is fine (right) .
And now we have the fish, I notice it's looking at me, it's pointing this direction. What does that mean? That means er, you would have to drink a glass of white liquor because the head of the fish is pointing toward you. Ok, then ... That's that's a custom from the North. If that is a custom, then I would have to drink a glass of white liquor, so please.
Ok, now these white liquors are pretty serious stuff. When being served this, can the guest be in a position to decline at all? Yes, but the, the host would naturally prefer that you join him in drinking it. Well, I'm going to have to join the host then to a toast? That's right. Ok, now I've just struggled to get lower than your glass. That's right , and the host , try to lower his glass under yours to show his respect to you. Bottoms up! \"干杯!\" \"干杯\"
