Whether it’s a carol (圣诞颂歌) service or an evening of karaoke down the pub many people will enjoy a good old singsong this Christmas. Singing aloud will not just lift the spirits – it’s good for your physical health as well. Filling the lungs with air, increasing the heart rate and getting blood pumping round the body faster can all help our physical health.

For the past few years Heart Research UK has been running a Christmas campaign aimed at getting people singing, simply for the benefit it can bring. The organizer of the campaign says singing is a safe, simple and social activity that everyone can enjoy. ―Singing is linked to long life, stress reduction, and general health protection. It also brings a great amount of happiness. It is impossible to sing well with a long face because it affects your pitch (音高).‖

Professor Graham Welch, who leads the International Music Education Research Centre at the University of London, has spent more than 30 years studying the effects of singing. He says that singing is a form of exercise. It means we’re also having a strong aerobe activity (有氧运动) when we’re singing, which results in increasing the feeling of pleasure while decreasing that of stress.

―And communal singing – like in a singing group, a church service or even a singsong in the pub, helps improve our sense of self – respect. It increases our sense of satisfaction with ourselves, a greater sense of feeling included.‖

Helen Astrid, a singing teacher, also sees the great effects that singing brings. ―It lifts us up on a spiritual level, it helps our self – respect, and it’s great for all ages from small kids to grannies you can have a good sing and let your hair down.‖

But she warns people not to have too many beers or glasses of wine, though a glass may

The Bronte sisters were three sisters who became famous novelists. Their lives and works are associated with the lonely moors of Yorkshire, England, where they lived. Patrick Bronte, the sisters’ father, was a poor Irishman who became the parish clergyman of the small, isolated town of Haworth, Yorkshire. Bronte was somewhat strange and inclined to be strict. His wife died in 1821 and her sister brought up the family conscientiously, but with little affection or understanding. The sisters went to several boarding schools where they received a better education than usual for girls at that time, but in a harsh atmosphere.

Few jobs were available for women at that time, and the Bronte sisters, except for occasional jobs as governesses or schoolteachers, lived their entire lives at home. They were shy, poor, and lonely, and occupied themselves with music, drawing, reading and ---above all---writing. Their isolation led to the early development of their imaginations. In 1846, under the masculine pen names of Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell, the sisters published a joint volume of poems. Although only two copies were sold, all three sisters soon had their first novels published.

Charlotte Bronte’s most famous novel Jane Eyre (1847) is largely autobiographical. Through the heroine, Charlotte relived her hated boarding school life and her experiences as a governess in a large house. Rochester, the hero and master of the house, is fictional. Jane

4

Eyre was enormously successful, but many readers were shocked that Rochester, who tried to make Jane his mistress, should be rewarded by marrying her. Some readers were also shocked because Jane wanted to be regarded as a thinking and independent person, rather than as a weak female.

Charlotte Bronte wrote three other novels. The first one, The Professor, was not published until 1857, after her death. Shirley (1849) is set among the labour riots of the early 1800s. Villette (1853) the most popular of the three, is based on Charlotte’s unhappy experiences as a governess in Brussels.

What will probably be discussed in the coming paragraphs of this passage? A. The other two sisters’ works. B. Charlotte Bronte’s life in Brussels. C. What is talked about in the novel, Villette. D. The good news is that James Cameron’s Avatar, his first big film since Titanic, 12 years ago, is a good film. The bad news-at least for Cameron is that his film is not the masterpiece he set out to make. Nobody spends so much money(more than £214 million) or spends so much time(the project started in 1995) to make just a good film. No, Cameron has intended to make a classic science-fiction epic(史诗)that will take its place along with Star Wars. The Matrix or his own Terminator films. But, amazingly enough, Avatar is so beautiful that it’s almost too rich to take in and appreciate on one viewing. It’s not afraid of social and political comments, educating us in the evils(丑恶)of capitalism while entertaining us with the evils of capitalism.

The curious thing about Avatar is that, for all of its advanced technological work, there is something out of date. The idea of humans using other bodies to travel in other worlds was an exciting concept for novelists and film-makers back in the 1990s. ―Second Life‖ can be easily found in films of that decade. Avatar’s political idea also seems out of date. humans destroy things for short-sighted profits, and this has been going on all the time throughout the human history, hasn’t it?

Undoubtedly, Cameron unbelievably succeeds in creating an extremely, beautiful world that nobody has ever seen. But this wonderful shell of beauty can’t make up Avatar’s lack of heart. In the past, Cameron could always mix big scenes with strong feelings. What’s missing here is the heart-breaking moment. The love story between Jake and Neytiri doesn’t take off the way. Jack and Rose did in Titanic.

However, despite all these, we will be left with a film that’s no masterpiece, but still well worth seeing.

51.Considering the money and time spent on it, Avatar . A.is far from really a good film B.invites a lot of bad review C.costs too much than it deserves D.needs more investment 52.The following films are made by Cameron EXCEPT . A.Avatar B.The Matrix C.Terminator D.Titanic 53.What’s the disadvantage of Avatar according to the passage? A.It entertains people without educating them. B.It doesn’t expose evils of capitalism. C.It lacks heart-breaking moment. D.It creates a world that doesn’t exist at all.

54.According to the article, the author thinks that . A.Avatar is still the best of Cameron’s works B.Avatar is fearless when expressing its ideas C.good films should have big beautiful scenes D.Avatar provides new ideas about love and life 55.What does the writer think of the film Avatar? A.It’s a masterpiece the has seen since Titanic. B.It’s a classic science-fiction epic like Star Wars.

7

C.It’s a wonderful film with strong feeling. D.It’s a good science-fiction film worth seeing.

But an unnamed official with the administration said that, in fact, many senior staff from news media who supported the regulation were worried that years later, the younger generation would forget how to use formal Chinese expressions. The official also pointed out that the regulation was only for formal publications in Chinese language, and it only banned Chinglish words in the publication. 56.The new regulation by the General Administration of Press and Publication may be aimed
