It was a quarter past nine as Marie hurried into the office building where she was going to work. Her bus had inched along through heavy morning traffic, making her a few minutes late for her very first job. She decided to start out half an hour earlier the next day. Once inside the lobby, she had to stand at the elevators and wait several minutes before she could get on one going to the sixth floor. When she finally reached the office marked \"King Enterprises,\" she knocked at the door nervously and waited. There was no answer. She tapped on the door again, but still there was no reply. From inside the next office, she could hear the sound of voices, so she opened the door and went in. Although she was sure it was the same office she had been in two weeks before when she had had the interview with Mr. King, it looked quite different now. In fact, it hardly looked like an office at all. The employees were just standing around chatting and smoking. At the far end of the room, somebody must have just told a good joke, she thought, because there was a loud burst of laughter as she came in. For a moment she had thought they were laughing at her. Then one of the men looked at his watch, clapped his hands and said something to the others. Quickly they all went to their desks and, in a matter of seconds, everyone was hard at work. No one paid any attention to Marie. Finally she went up to the man who was sitting at the desk nearest to the door and explained that this was her first day in the office. Hardly looking up from his work, he told her to have a seat and wait for Mr. King, who would arrive at any moment. Then Marie
realized that the day's work in the office began just before Mr. King arrived. Later she found out that he lived in Connecticut and came into Manhattan on the same train every morning, arriving in the office at 9:35, so that his staff knew exactly when to start working.

A) they saw a stranger in the office B) they had finished their morning break C) no one wanted to talk to Marie D) the boss was about to arrive 34. Passage Two
There are stories about two U.S. presidents, Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren, which attempt to explain the American English term OK. We don’t know if either story is true, but they are both interesting.
The first explanation is based on the fact that President Jackson had very little education. In fact, he had difficulty reading and writing. When important papers came to Jackson, he tried to read them and then had his assistants explain what they said. If he approved of a paper, he would write “all correct” on it. The problem was that he didn’t know how to spell, so what he really wrote was “ol korekt”. After a while, he shortened that term to “OK”.
The second explanation is based on the place where President Ban Buren was born, Kinderhook, New York. Ban Buren’s friends organized a club to help him become President. They called the club the Old Kinderhook Club, and anyone who supported Van Buren was called “OK”. 36. The author _C____.
A) believes both of the stories
B) does not believe a word of the stories C) is not sure whether the stories are true D) is telling the stories just for fun
37. According to the passage, President Jackson __D___. A) couldn’t draw up any documents at all
B) didn’t like to read important papers by himself
C) often had his assistants sign documents for him D) was no t good at reading, writing or spelling 38. According to the first story, the term “OK” _C____. A) was approved of by President Jackson B) was the title of some official documents C) was first used by President Jackson D) was an old way to spell “all correct”
39. According to the second story, the term “OK” __D___. A) was the short way to say “Old Kinderhook Club” B) meant the place where President Van Buren was born C) was the name of Van Buren’s club D) was used to call Van Buren’s supporters in the election
40. According to the second story, the term “OK” was first used __B___. A) by Van Buren B) in a presidential election
C) to organize the Old Kinderhook Club
D) by the members of the “Old Kinderhook Club”
Passage Three
Not everyone in the world requires the same amount of living space. The amount of space a person needs around him is a cultural difference, not an economic one. Knowing your own psychological space needs is important because they strongly affect your choices, including, for example, the number of bedrooms in the home. If you were brought up in a two-child family and both you and your sister or brother had your own bedrooms, the chances are, if you have two children or more, that you will also offer separate bedrooms for them. In America, for example, they train people to want to have their won rooms by giving them their own rooms when they are babies. This is very rare in the world. In many other countries, the baby sleeps in the same bed with his parents or in bed near them.
The space in the home also shows a lot about psychological space needs. Some families gather closer to each other and the size of their house has nothing to do with it. Others have separate little corners where family members go to be alone.
Although it is true that psychological space needs are not decided by economic reasons, they sometimes have to be changed because of economic pressures. It is almost impossible, however, to completely change your psychological space needs.
41. The first sentence in Paragraph One means ____B______. A. No two people need exactly the same amount of living space B. Living space requirements are not always the same C. The world requires the same amount of living space D. Nobody needs a required amount of living space

B. they are brought up in a large family
C. the children in the family sleep in the same bed with their parents D. it satisfies their psychological needs
43. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? D
A. Americans are trained to live in large rooms at birth.
B. Economic situations decide one’s amount of space needs.
C. Knowing your psychological space needs is important, as it affects your future. D. People in various countries demand different psychological space.
44. According to the writer of the passage, psychological space needs __B___. A. are not affected by income at all B. can hardly be changed altogether C. can be changed if you make up your mind to do so. D. have nothing to do with cultural background 45. The best title for the passage is __B___.
A. American Way of Living B. Psychological Space
C. Space Needs in Different Countries D. Psychological Space and Economic Pressure
